Narrow Fjord

This lovely place is easy to overlook as you plan your journey along the east coast of Iceland. There are very few buildings, the road is pot-holed dirt, and the gradients max out at 18%.

Visit on a day when the weather is being kind, with cloud shadows chasing across the mountain faces and the sun at its 30° meridian, and you're rewarded with this astonishing landscape. It's easy to imagine elves and trolls living here.

@hosford42 hmm, i am not sure what you mean by mathematical model. I very much imagine having even just a few links between echo chambers that can communicate issues across even if its just indirectly, might trigger highly complex dynamics - ...i guess kind of like the buttferly causing a thunderstorm.

I think that is also really needed, because just having echo chambers can potentially leqd to conflict escalations nobody benefits from.

Astonishing, really, that £150+ million is not enough to conduct a study that if you put a 2-lane dedicated cycle way between car parking and a promenade, people *will* treat it as a pavement.

Portsmouth Council learned nothing from doing exactly that at the eastern 2km of Southsea seafront, so they’ve done the same thing again at the western 2km.

I’ve not been as closely exposed to them as you, but I’ve had a similar reaction. They talk a lot about their work on privacy, which I agree with, but they seem to have the typical US view that problem is not oppression in general, but simply that oppression is more efficiently handled by the private sector and the government should stay out of it.

In a recent attempt to clean up my studio, I found a color study of crystals done for RHYTHM OF WAR. The obvious direction would have been to add a Stormlight character, but I didn't think about that. I hadn’t painted a spaceship in far too long and felt the pull of the stars.

this one other time on awful.systems an AI guy tried to convince us he was doing things with his code that were impossible without AI, and he gave examples

and all the examples were such basic editing tasks that we started giving vimgolfed command strings and instructions on how to do all of them in a number of basic text editors. this wasn’t even the kind of thing that needs an IDE.

and that’s the thing, isn’t it? for refactors, the LLM is just executing ordinary commands. it can’t do anything you can’t do.

and if you learn the actual tools you’re using (your editor, your toolchain, maybe an IDE if you really need it), you can do anything the LLM does faster and more accurately.

the “AI is just a tool” thing is rich coming from people who never learned to use the tools of their trade at all

I suppose I can take a badge of honour from the fact that I was certifiably among the first people who genuinely disliked David Heinemeier Hansson, everything he is, and everything he does as early as 2005, when it wasn't fashionable, it wasn't right, and it wasn't profitable, and even later when his Naziness was profiled on the cover of WIRED.

If anyone wants to know what format to upload videos into, that won't take multiple minutes to process (and which will be the format that mastodon re-encodes to anyways), then use the following ffmpeg command;

ffmpeg -i input.mov -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Or;

• MP4
• Video Codec h264
• Audio Codec AAC
• Pixel Format yuv420p

Anything else gets re-encoded, including .mov and .webm, to this.
