Wie hasst man ein Land? Wie liebt man es? Tibe redet ständig davon; ich habe diesen Trick nie gelernt. Ich kenne Menschen, ich kenne Städte, Farmen, Berge, Flüsse und Felsen, ich weiß, wie bei einem Sonnenuntergang im Herbst die Sonnenstrahlen auf ein bestimmtes Stück Ackerland an einem Abhang fallen. Doch welchen Sinn hat es, all dem eine Grenze zu geben, all dem einen Namen zu geben und dort, wo der Name nicht mehr zutrifft, aufzuhören, es schön zu finden? Was ist das, Liebe zum eigenen Land? Ist es der Hass auf das eigene Nichtland? Dann wäre sie wahrhaftig nichts Gutes. Ist es vielleicht ganz schlicht und einfach Eigenliebe? Das ist etwas Gutes, aber man darf weder eine Tugend daraus machen noch einen Beruf … Wie ich das Leben liebe, so liebe ich die Berge der Domäne Estre, doch diese Liebe ist nicht von einer Grenze aus Hass umgeben. Im Hinblick darauf, was jenseits dieser Wirklichkeit liegt, bin ich – hoffentlich – unwissend.«
