*El eternauta* / *The Eternaut*

I watched the first four episodes and that is enough to advise this series from Argentina. Based on the comic with the same name.

It's on Netflix, but it's of course also available via non corporate channels. Don't watch it with English audio, but with the original Spanish audio with subtitles.

"A Memory Called Empire" ticks all of my boxes.

A Star Wars-inspired space opera whose narrative follows a murder-mystery plot. Our protagonist functions simultaneously as ambassador in an imperial society of Roman complexity.

I didn't feel particularly attached to the characters, but it's high-concept science fiction done right. The premise of implantable memories is very well developed in a plot that at times reads like an espionage thriller.

Writing research question for the Sci Fi book I'm writing:
I need slang terms for computer malware that are based on languages other than English (like "worm" or "virus" are) or stories other than Greek mythology ( like "trojan" is). This is a far future deep-space community, but they originally came from Earth.

For example I thought of tsetse because of the African sleeping sickness that's transmitted by a fly.

Any ideas? Words for parasites, traps, nested dolls, hidden things, etc, in other cultures?

FOOTFALL (1984)
Acrylic - 29" x 19"

This Larry Niven cover is the only painting done for Del Rey Books in which I was “art-directed” into doing something I did not want to do. 1/5

An elephant-like alien with multiple branching trunks hides behind the wood framed wreckage of a building. The tentacles of one trunk holds a mirror to peer around the corner. Another trunk holds a machine gun with curved magazine and bayonet. A man in drab military fatigues approaches with rifle in hand. The mirror isn't fixed on him but rather a woman in a tattered pink dress standing on the hill behind. She is pointing toward where the alien huddles. A red jacket is strapped to the alien's back along with a satchel that contained a teddy bear. Across a field of wheat and a foreground strewn with household wreckage that includes a water heater, bicycle, and wooden ladder, we can see the remains of a house that is only partially standing.

What if the Death Star was not a mere weapon, but a Sith altar of human sacrifice? A dark place this line of thought will carry you...

Read the full (and dare I say chillingly plausible!) theory at my #blog: https://www.adamasnemesis.com/2025/06/18/star-wars-the-dark-theory/

This post's featured image is Edvard Munch's "The Vampire" (trust me, the Sith are so much worse...).

I was a latchkey kid growing up, and spent two years getting off a bus and hanging out at the local library after school until my mom got out of work and picked me up. I used that time to read every single science fiction book in the library... hundreds and hundreds of books... which makes me feel like I have a fairly good basis to conclude we have taken the "science fiction dystopia" path rather than the "science fiction utopia" path. #sciencefiction
