A stone-flagged pavement, next to a wide canal, with a wooden jetty protruding from the left of the frame and an island dense with houses and trees in the background across the water, in early morning light. There is a pile of crumbs on the edge of the pavement, and six sheepish-looking pigeons at a nonchalant distance from it, because a gaggle of a dozen or so seagulls are in the process of descending on it in an angry flapping honking mob. The seagull in the centre of the photo is standing proprietorially on top of the pile of crumbs, wings aggressively up, with its beak fully open mid-honk, screaming at its fellows to keep away. It is a scene of noise and chaos.

Colour photo of a brick wall abutting a canal, on a day with very high water. There is a small low arch with a white marble surround set in the wall, through which can be seen a couple of seaweed-clad marble steps leading up to a street out of shot; hypothetically giving access from the canal, except the boat that could fit through the arch, especially today, would have to be exceptionally narrow and very low indeed. The bricks in the wall are a crumbling faded terracotta colour, and the water in front is a clear pale turquoise with some small gentle ripples. On the right of the arch is the edge of another building, marked by a pillar of marble with greenery growing up it, and the corner of a shuttered window covered by bottle-green netting. The whole thing feels very improbable and slightly magical, as if this whole setup was designed for and by tiny elves or water spirits - very emblematic of Venice.

Looking out over a canal on a very foggy day. The water is an icy green colour, blending into the grey-white fog, and it is hard to make out the line between the two, but if you look very closely there is the faintest hint of a row of houses on the opposite side of the canal, almost imperceptible in the thick fog, more like a stripe across the centre of the photo where the fog is slightly darker. In the foreground on the right, a wooden mooring pole rises dark and stark from the water, with a black cormorant perched on the top of it. The picture feels lonely and a bit spooky, and you can almost hear how the fog is deadening the sound.

A tiger striped brown and black tabby cat with long white whiskers which look like a well-curated moustache, seen from the side but with their head turned towards the camera, lying in an excellent loaf shape in the middle of a stone pavement, which leads to doors and corridors behind. Their eyes are closed and they have a calm, beatific, no-fucks-given expression on their face. They look wise and serene.

The tower is without distinguishing features, apart from a small very narrow arched window, which looks more like a slightly wider than normal arrow slit, which sits like a line drawn with a black marker pen in the top right corner of the facade.

Warm light spills from the window behind him, as if there is a party in full swing, and he has chosen to step away for a moment of solitary peace and contemplation. Below the window is the top of a pale shop awning, and the wall of the building is stained textured old plaster. Despite being in Venice, the image feels very French to me, an embodiment of Left Bank intellectual hedonism and je ne sais quoi.

A stained and dirty ochre yellow wall at the corner of a wet and rainy stone paved Venetian alleyway, which has been graffitied in black paint capital letters "Drinking cocktails saves the planet". The paint has run on several of the letters, making it look suitably drunken.

A red Italian postbox fixed to a crumbling sand-coloured plaster wall. It has lots of stickers on it, and some illegible words scrawled in black pen, but the eye is drawn to a stencilled bit of graffiti in the centre which says "Banksy is a girl"

There is a shop near our house that has stood empty for a number of years, and, this being Venice, when they started renovating it a few weeks ago there was a distinct feeling of trepidation as to what it was going to turn into - yet another shop of plastic tourist tat? yet another shop of nasty handbags? - so I am delighted to report that it is in fact going to be a bookshop! 😍 They were starting to stock the shelves when I walked past earlier, and the New Book smell reached all the way out into the street 😊
