I just came across one of my old essays [I called them "Thots"] on #Personhood, written on February 3, 1982.
"I look at myself and what do I see? I see a person. Not a girl, not a woman, not a homo sapien, not a citizen, not a statistic. Just a person.
I am wearing dark blue knit stockings, slightly faded jeans, a plaid shirt, and an old denim vest; and somehow, these things are part of me. I am not just wearing them -- they are an extension of my persona. Persona. Personality. Not girl-ality, woman-ality, homo sapien-ality, but PERSON-ality. Ah, at least someone out there agrees that I am a person and things that pertain to me are person-related. I like that.
When I 'am' a person, there is no pressure for me to think or behave a certain way. I can just be me -- relaxed, comfortable, happy. I also feel that my style of dress sometimes reflects this person-ness. At least it does as I am writing this [still true].
Also, being a person, I can also be whatever else I feel like being. I can be a feminine person, a masculine person, an eccentric person, a nice person, etc. The possibilities are endless.
Which would you rather be? A fixed label or a flexible person?"

🏳️⚧️💖Next, for my honoring of important elders of our community for the Trans Day of Remembrance is We'wha, a Ihamana, and two-spirit member of the Zuni tribe. There is no consensus on what pronouns are best for We'wha but because native/indigenous folks recognize Ihamana as being distinct from men or women, and fulfilling both roles in their culture I will be using (they/them). We'wha was, perhaps, one of the most famous and influential Ihamana in history. They were a cultural ambassador for Native and indigenous peoples, especially the Zuni. They lived from 1849-1896, during a time when our trans kin had almost no representation, no language to conceptualize our experience, and no safety--and despite this they were sought out and elevated in writing. They learned english and were very knowledgeable; this enabled them to educate Euro-american white individuals and be a valuable contact for many different groups and institutions. They were part of a Zuni delegation to Washington D.C. and even met the president, Grover Cleveland. ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🤎🖤🩶🤍🩷
🏳️⚧️💖⚧️ Thank you, We'wha. You are a paragon of representation and community. Rest in power, dear sibling.💖🏳️⚧️⚧️

Bobbie Lea Bennett campaigned for access to transition related surgery in the US to be covered by Medicare. Her campaign forced Medicare officials to recognize transition related surgeries as essential. Bobbie was also a disability rights campaigner.

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance. On this day we remember our trans siblings who are no longer with us due to transphobia and anti-trans violence. We honour their memory and remind ourselves to fight for the living. We will keep working until all trans people can live happy and fulfilled lives free from transphobia.

PSA for any trans+ person looking to start, or currently doing, any kind of voice training
Seattle Voice Lab has broken their silence over a former employee of theirs (Jimmy Chen), who set up his own voice coaching service called Trans Voice Lab.
We need to address Trans Voice Lab.
We highly recommend watching / listening to the whole video, but here are some key points within their video:
- Jimmy's employment was terminated for "manipulative teaching practices and dishonesty towards" their students.
- He downloaded their bespoke training materials (SVL's intellectual property) and client lists (!!!), then used these to set up his own voice coaching service and write a book.
- SVL didn't want to have to make the video, but has felt obliged to do so.
- SVL is pursuing "legal counsel" over Jimmy's actions.
tl;dr
- Avoid any videos or guides from Jimmy Chen.
- Avoid using Trans Voice Lab at all costs.
Boosts and crossposts very welcome, as we need to make more folks aware of this
