Good morning.
I wanted to share with you the story of a patient I saw in clinic yesterday.
She’s a #transgender woman, who transitioned in the 60s in what she tells me was the first Gender Identity Clinic in London back then.
She’s currently in her 80s and living life to the fullest.
Anyway, she was seeing me for a bunch of symptoms and every other sentence she’d punctuate it with “but I’m not worth it” or “there’s other patients more important than me” and even “I know I’m not a real woman, I can never have children.”
This last statement was completely irrelevant to the consultation (I’m a Geriatrician. None of my patients can have children)
I eventually told her to stop putting herself down & treating herself as a second-class citizen. She was a patient like anyone else and on this occasion, I could help with her symptoms and keeping her independent and active.
I wanted to share this to see if it was a common feeling among trans people (I hope not) or if she was just low due to her physical symptoms.
