MIT student exposed to Dimethyl Mercury (rumoured to have synthesized it himself and took it to a lab meeting, whereupon there was a spill).
NB: DMM is pretty much the benchmark for nerve agent toxicity. See also Karen Wetterhahn's entry on wikipedia if you want to know more. (This is the organic chemistry equivalent of building your own "demon core".)
EDIT: recent update offers some hope: https://bsky.app/profile/brachinus.bsky.social/post/3muapa7rm6k2g

@johnlogic @faraiwe @cstross time for an update to the incidents section of the Wikipedia page for DMM?
So... I was working on preparing forge.cloudsling.dev to open to the public, to start hosting #FLOSS projects for free, away from Github and other tech overlords...
Well, it will take some more time than I wanted. Our services have been down for around 1h because of a bots avalanche that have been scrapping all they could.
Now, the "attack" continues:
CPU usage above 80% of total capacity.
Outbound traffic at 3MiBps... when we only have 15 registered users, and only me is looser enough to be touching that on a weekend.
Shutting down the servers for the rest of this weekend... 💔
@blogdiva I suspect we're always going to have that consent issue when we consider individual rights (BDFL) over communal rights.
The code is free speech, but how our code impacts others will hit Human Rights (communal rights), which is what consent is our freedom of association in safety.
When you consider the bigger impact our code and corporations have, it hits the other human rights, shelter, etc.
@blogdiva Both Free Software and Open Source Software are rooted in Individual rights.
The dev put the code up with no guarantees and its freely available. The user can download it, study it and add to it, depending on the licence they must then make those changes available.
But that's the free speech part. Consent and that Freedom of Association in safety doesn't factor in. But that's unofficially covered by community norms and frankly some norms don't consider consent.
The idea of "falling behind" by not going all-in on a specific technology is a marketing ploy used to create artificial urgency. It's not a fact. If you don't walk down one path you walk down another path. Both have unknown outcomes.
The claim of "falling behind" is the wording that should deter you from that path. In essence it is trying to force a future on you that is beneficial to a specific agent, often out of commercial interest. The claim does not invite you to reflect on your own, or your community’s, needs and wishes.
Artificial urgency is an enemy to independent, thoughtful progress.
@milan spam protection false positive?
Being fond of reading back through old Byte magazines (and running several period machines) I always wondered about Sphere Corp, who were prolific advertisers and offered a machine seemingly well ahead of its time. Lo and behold, Ben Zotto’s written a book about Sphere that answered many questions about this early microcomputer’s history and legacy. Highly recommended!
#Mastodon (the band) - The Vanishing, from their new album that was released yesterday.
@Gargron Great track - love the guitar tone. It's made me dig out Blood Mountain - I'm going to give it a spin
@dancingtreefrog
Thanks, I hoped they would give more information about that issue.
@apps
If they do, I don't know where to find it. I'll poke around and see if any of their options might have it.
This #Summer has truly revealed the scale of the #ClimateCrisis. Right now we are in the small lull between the moment when the climate crisis starts destroying lives, and the moment that citizens realise that governments have chosen to "adapt to climate change", meaning this suffering will become the norm.
I suspect we are severely underestimating the anger people will feel when they find out their governments have abandoned them to this nightmare.
Apollo 15: In the Mountains of the Moon (1971) (NASA documentary about first extended stay moon mission)
Spacewalks on the International Space Station (2021) (filmed by the astronauts themselves)
so to recap:
1. no discussions about #LLM #AI can happen only with developers. you need people equipped with knowledge of #law #ethics #sociology to, if not have all the answers, at least ask the right questions.
2. the Libre in #FLOSS anchors the sociopolitical implications of FREE and OPEN. it is there to bring in CONSENT. without consent, there is no #FLOSS
3. since slopware intentionally obliterate consent at scale, LLMs and AI are antithetical to FLOSS, democracy & society.

Hallo zusammen!
This event is for everyone! Whether you are a new or existing volunteer, come and learn more about the campaign, hear from your Green candidate Lan Pham MP, and have dinner with us.
We look forward to seeing you there!
