The usual amazing interview with Cory Doctorow:
"In this episode of Dot Social, recorded live at the Fediverse House at SXSW 2025, Doctorow unpacks the concept of “enshittification.” ... He talks about how to challenge platform monopolies and the importance of true federation."

An email landed in my inbox today promoting a faculty retreat for my college with a large time slot on "AI for productivity". I responded in part with:

"I say this without exaggeration: There is no way to adopt generic AI tools (like LLMs) at an institutional level in a way that is ethical."

I hate that universities are often so willfully ignorant when it comes to adopting new technologies. As if they are somehow separate from the moral, ethical, and political implications of their development and use when they are in fact central to it.

Good news.
“While it does not take a federal judge to recognize that marauding bands of masked, rifle-toting goons have been violating ordinary people’s rights throughout Southern California,” he said, “we are hopeful that today’s ruling will be a step toward accountability for the federal government’s flagrant lawlessness that we have all been witnessing.” #Gift#Resist#ICEhttps://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/11/us/immigration-raids-judge-injunction.html?unlocked_article_code=1.V08._vUp.Dehy8cnOg4sa&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

From Timothy Snyder:

“In the simplest version…detained people will be offered back to the companies for which they were just working.

The government is putting before us the temptation to cooperate in fascist dehumanization on a grand scale.

The first action is simple. CEOs should now, this summer, this month, next week, sign a pledge not to use labor from concentration camps.”

DO NOT COMPLY. ✊🏻

@fightfascism The most important thing to remember when planning out a way to pass secret messages using steganography is: Be original!

If it's widely known that someone can hide a secret message in a particular way, say, in the lower-order bits of an image, then strangers already know to look in that place for messages -- strangers including the folks that you don't want to read your messages.

Be clever and subtle and original. Find a new way to hide the information that no one has ever used before. If no one has thought of it before, they aren't very likely to think of it now, either.

@fightfascism

The important thing for using steganography is that the person who receives the message knows where to look for it, but no one else does.

You can pass a message in the most ridiculously simple ways: A rock moved or turned a certain way, a lapel pin turned slightly to the left instead of slightly to the right, scratching your ear vs your nose... These are things that can communicate short messages in real time with other parties who are present remaining oblivious. But the code must be known *in advance*.

Get with your friends and figure this out now. Don't wait till disaster strikes. And do it in a private way; online communications are not safe.
