I said this a lot during his first term. He has no intention of leaving office alive.
Friends, you may have seen this but if not, sharing:
"The LLM-generated proof hinges on a particular mathematical argument that it presented as its own but that actually first appeared in a 2016 paper by Miller and a collaborator."
@malte Exactly my point. Some other fields seem to be accepting the mess, but infra is too important to risk. If you or your org care about such things
@aem the fact that it already happened, and that it's easy to get *something* working out of an llm plus the invisibility of what sysadmins actually do makes me less optimistic, but i'm happy to be proven wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hey, @ai6yr, turns out typewriters aren't just for typing. : )

I was researching domain name censorship trying to understand what names I could recommend to people now realizing that .org is not safe. I discovered that the Canadian Internet Registration Authority confiscated a `.ca` from https://boycottindigobooks.com over bogus parody claims.
Nothing like a little absurdity in the online world to remind us of the wild west days of the internet.

@ramsey I am a pathetic nerd, but I recognized her voice immediately. By which I mean one of her voices. Has she paid back the court-ordered $452 million in restitution yet?
Firefox Nova, the browser's rounded new design, will go live later this month.
Code commit suggests the redesign will be enabled by default for all users in Firefox 157 – barring any last minute hiccups, of course.

When describing the big things in your world, also remember to include the kind of small, human details that will make it feel real. Graffiti. A drunk's pool of vomit. The safety card in the back of the seat.

@freddy @timbray Also note that the GDR had a working welfare state and *much* better rights for women: womens' rights took a big leap *backward* on reunification (eg. access to abortion and contraception, support for working mothers, equal pay). There's other stuff the west swept under the rug—ways in which quality of life in East Germany was better for the average person than the subsequent situation.
And Russian disinfo ops have had 35 years to work with this ingrained grievance.
From my reading of rave/trance histories in germany (much of my favorite music at that time was german/east german during the "fall of the wall" time), West Germans treated easterners very badly, analogous to American "white trash" tropes. I dont know to what degree this was, but it wasn't nothing.
Also in personal experience, around 2010 i was in Berlin for some academic science and tech art events, we were out to dinner with s very mixed international crowd, as is common in that field; i was appalled when local advanced University students referred to "gypsies" in deeply racist and dehumanizing ways. I was shocked at the openness of it. Of course I've heard that and worse here in the US, but not in academic circles.
Why do I get snide remarks when I post something in Mvskoke?
You wouldn’t comment something snide under a post in German or Spanish or Greek, so why do you feel comfortable doing it with native languages?

Absolute truth.
@cy I wonder if the turning point is money per se or just too many humans so that the social ties are too diffuse.
If money vanished overnight, people would immediately begin building stronger social ties with nearby humans, regardless of how many humans there were in the world. Densely populated neighborhoods have historically been highly social, depending on police presence to disrupt that. Overpopulation is not what's doing it.
