#PennedPossibilities 839 — What sort of antagonist are you writing? (See @floofpaldi's post for ideas or clarification.)
(1/2)
This is just something to ponder. I find it interesting to read or talk about. That's all.
"The type of antagonist will depend on the specific story being written, but common antagonists include a purely evil villain with no motivation, a relatable antagonist with whom the audience can sympathize, a hypocritical antagonist who is two-faced, or an antagonist that is a force of nature or an internal struggle within the protagonist. A good antagonist often has complex motivations, a clear backstory, and their actions drive the plot forward and challenge the protagonist's thematic orientation."
Thoughts:
Villain: A character who is actively evil and seeks to prevent the protagonist from achieving their goals.
Anti-villain: A character whose motives are not entirely evil but still work against the protagonist.
Relatable Antagonist: A character who is scary because they have qualities that remind the audience of themselves.
Hypocritical Antagonist: Someone who pretends to be good but is actually wicked.
Frightening Antagonist: Someone who evokes fear more than hatred.
Skilled Antagonist: Someone whose skills are matched to the protagonist's abilities.
Insane Antagonist: Someone whose unpredictable nature makes them a formidable foe.
Traitorous Antagonist: Someone who betrays a friend or family member.

For my own story, Duncan is more of the traditional evil antagonist, as in an actual villain. He's just pure evil, filled with hatred for mortals, the same hatred for vampires and werewolves alike as well, and obsessed with the very idea of possessing things. He wants to kill. He wants to hunt. There's nothing redeemable about him. Saying anything more for the time being would probably give away some big spoilers, so I'll refrain.

#TTRPG #worldbuilding suggestion: Pick a random German folk tale from my wiki (using the link below) and try to work it into your setting!
What have you got?

#PennedPossibilities 838 — MC POV: You’re on your death bed. Who do you want by your side?
Fenella: It would be Alistair. I want him by my side, and I want his hand in mine. If his face is the last one that I see, then I suppose I'll die happy. At this point, we can also add Hati in there as well. She's becoming a close friend of mine, her and that Samuel of hers. Lovely creatures.

#PennedPossibilities 837 — Which of your characters have the best chemistry, whether it's friendly, romantic, or otherwise?
Ooooh, I love this one. It's definitely Hati and Alistair! They're friendship goals (and also my absolute favorite to write). These two are so close. They tease each other constantly, they're always there for one another, and they'll protect each other to their final breaths. The sass is off the charts as well. People, on occasion, even think they're lovers. I'll include two funny moments from different chapters.

#PennedPossibilities 836 — SC POV: What is your darkest childhood memory?
(So, why this question? I'll explain.
The childhood stuff matters. Bright, beautiful memories matter as much as the dark ones. Sure, we don’t value the dark ones the way we value the bright, but whether we’re aware of it or not, the dark ones influence our life choices as well.
The same must be true for your character. So, think about your character’s past and sculpt it honestly. Don’t hide the nasty bits. Acknowledge them and understand how they’ve shaped your character’s personality and worldview.)
Hati: Seeing my uncle murder my father. He butchered him. I was only ten years old. It's not a memory I look back on rather often. In fact, I try not to think about it. Over the years, it's become fuzzier. I loved my father, and my mother as well, but I hope to forget about his gruesome death someday. Memories tend to fade for all of us.

#PennedPossibilities 835 — How does your antagonist like to unwind and relax?
Commit a bit of murder, maim a few innocents, drink a lot of blood... You know, the usual.

DAY 29 The Electric Grid
Walking around the city, you can probably guess that a lot of buildings have their own way of making electricity - whether it’s solar or wind, it’s solidly anchored in the local culture.
But to ensure that the whole city is always connected, the city has a particularly intricate power grid, like an urban nervous system.
The city is directly linked to the wind turbines in the mountains, whose power runs down the mountain and spreads through various electric substations.
If you pass close to one of them at night, you might hear the buzzing of the current passing by, singing among the calm breeze of the night.

I haven't done one of these in a while, so here goes!
Hey #Women, #LGBTQ+ and #BIPoC folx! Are you an expert in something? Do you have a fancy degree or a lot of experience in some field/hobby? Do you like to infodump about it? Then out yourself in the replies below!
I'll start. Hi 👋 I'm Alice. I'm multi-queer (pan/bisexual and nonbinary). I'm an expert lockpicker and data scientist, and I have an education in computer science, psychology, and statistics.
Your turn 😊
@alice hi! I'm Alex, transmasc yarn dragon and #hopepunk word wizard. #AMA about #knitting, #Minecraft, #SFF #worldbuilding and #linguistics including grammar/usage and #etymology. If I didn't know it, I'll know how to find out!
Got asked today what someone can do with my #ttrpg system https://versesrpg.com, and I thought I'd go into some detail:
Let’s say you are thinking about building a TTRPG built in a #folk #horror genre. You want to create opportunities for players to explore the creepy esotericism that underlies the real-world history of folktales. You've got a cool idea for how to structure a way to convert folk #monsters into a rules framework to enable horror-tinged encounters
(thread…)
You could write out those conversion rules, then the game rules, and the character creation rules, and everything else. You could spend a lot of time building that out, play-testing it & figuring out how to publish it.
Or, you could build on top of 'Verses
What does that look like?
1st, you might write out your conversion rules as a Rules Module
Then you might write just enough of your #worldbuilding to make your idea playable...
Open question: how would disaster response, relief and rescue look in a #Solarpunk world? How would it be different?
Would there be any visual differences, when a helicopter evacuates people from a flooded area, or when volunteers distribute relief packages?

Are there any #scifi settings that prominently use airships over spacecraft, other than Final Fantasy?
A thought on #DnD - style #ttrpg where the player characters can be classified as "professional treasure hunters" either deliberately (they go into dungeons in order to seek treasure) or accidentally (they find treasure while they go into the dungeon for other reasons).
The absurd amount of valuables the player character find has ample precedent in European #folklore (click on the link for a few examples), and indeed, the whole concept of treasure hunting has precedent in the "Magical Treasure Hunting" craze of Early Modern Europe.
However, folk tales are almost always "one-shots" - the person who finds the treasure either gets rich and lives heavily ever after, or they feel regret for the rest of their lives because they missed their one big shot at riches.
In contrast, TTRPG usually feature ongoing campaigns, and thus the PCs will usually delve into "dungeons" and similar treasure-laden sites again and again. So the question the GM - and indeed, anyone who does #worldbuilding for such settings - needs to answer is:
"Why would the player characters continue to risk life and limb even after finding riches?"

What are your thoughts on this?
In a genre like cyberpunk, they're inevitable.
There are so many things to choose from. Here's one example, though, if you're curious.
