👑 Kwanzaa 1 of 2
I have heard of Kwanzaa, but I never truly understood it until now. It's so beautiful.
Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday for Black people and the wider African diaspora. It is not a church holiday! It runs for seven days, from December 26 to January 1.
Why? The holiday started in 1966 to celebrate African heritage, unity, and community power using 7 core principles: the Nguzo Saba.
Here are the first 4 keys to building power together:
Keys 1 to 4: Working Together
1. Umoja / Unity: We stick together and stay strong
2. Kujichagulia / Self-Choice: You choose who you are
3. Ujima / Teamwork: We help build our group and neighbourhood
4. Ujamaa / Share Money: We support our own to make shared wealth
The highest protocol is LOVE. We use these keys to build an unbreakable community.
👑 Kwanzaa 2 of 2
The final 3 keys of Kwanzaa are all about your spirit, your purpose, and your beliefs.
Keys 5 to 7: Thinking and Believing
5. Nia / Purpose: You find your big reason for being here
6. Kuumba / Creativity: You use your gifts to make things better and more beautiful (That is today, Dec 31st)
7. Imani / Faith: You have a strong, deep belief in your people and a great future ahead. (Tomorrow, Jan 1st)
This wisdom is a gift; You are the source of all the good things you need.
What one key from this list will you use to make the New Year your best year yet?
A major milestone for next generation Covid vax: The first clinical trial for a pancoronavirus formulation of an existing vaccine was registered.
There are more clinical trial results for a vax for people with immunocompromise, & news on mucosal vax trials. Plus 12 preclinical reports.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to bed..

@jpm @abstractcode ah, Arduino-style
@ThermiteBeGiants @abstractcode you’re always morally correct to buy a Chinese clone Arduino where they’ve replaced the Mini-B with a C

Happy new year to the east coast.

A toast to the New Year. Two actually. #Rye #HoodRiddance2025 #LifeOfTheParty
Happy New Years pocket friends!
A year ago, I began microblogging about my #NoBuyYear2025 where my family made a commitment to reduce our consumption of non-essentials. I definitely can say I am so happy we did this. It has totally changed the way I think about #shopping and #money and #consumerism.
We thought of it as a traffic light system. We had a ‘green list’ which was what we decided was essential and we were allowed to buy. Then we had an ‘orange list’ which meant we looked second-hand first and only elevated it to buying new if we had to, then, well, red for non-essentials is a bit self explanitory isn’t it? Each person also got an allowance that was exempt from these rules.
At first, I thought of posting about all the things I bought each month. I stopped that after February because I realised that the idea was more about what I wasn’t buying and about changing my relationship with consumerism.
In this year, I learned that I can be much happier with much less, and I stopped feeling constant anxiety and stress over money; even when my income dipped to the lowest it’s ever been for a few months in 2025.
Gonna have another post in the next few days about my intentions for the next year.
So, what are your aspirations for the coming year?
Almost 20 new years for this one.

Joining others in saying a heartfelt thank you to all you wonderful folks on Mastodon who provided me with a ray of sanity and joyfulness amidst all the horribleness surrounding us.
Thanks for the cats, dogs, birds, flowers, footpaths, cityscapes, windows, doors, waves, Silent Sundays and so much more. And for all the alt text!
Thanks to those who are comfortable doing so for sharing everyday pieces of your lives. Getting to know you through these posts has been a delight.
And thanks for sharing important news I might have missed, from around the world — and thoughtful commentary on the news, in words and memes.
Thanks for all the responses to my own posts. They mean a lot to me!
And a final thanks to all the many developers, admins and moderators who keep this place running.
Here's wishing all of you the best possible new year.
LLMs and "supply-chain security" were the opening salvo of a campaign to restrict access to computation to organizations willing to build in surveillance to their products. that RAM is now exorbitant makes this moderately more clear. happy new year's from the imperial core
@abstractcode 1000% cursed, because you don’t have any of those cables anymore
@jpm @abstractcode ah, Arduino-style
Don’t forget about the Y2K26 problem
Time to do the ritual again.
