When I first moved here, I joined a bikecamping group that left from SF for Samuel P Taylor park. That was when I realized how much nature I could easily access without getting into a car. Even today, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge to go to San Anselmo for bread or China Camp for camping is still a beloved activity. The multimodal nature of transit is a blessing (I would then just head back to Larkspur and take a ferry back. Or put my bike in a bus from San Rafael)
Tofay, I am in a car as I’m going much much further. But the small weekend trips for birding or whale watching or mushroom foraying keep me happy here.
If you hike or bike, you can get a camp site quite easily even without a reservation
@skinnylatte my husband and I visited SF once, years before we got married. Biked across the golden gate on a rented tandem bicycle.
We came to the conclusion that such an experience is a really good part of a pre-wedding test of the relationship’s resilience.
We also took the ferry back to the city. 🤣
@phillycodehound wait….what? You didn’t know that? What kind of geek are you? Geek card revocation incoming…. 😂
@RobUsdin I think at some point I did. But just relearned it.

@benb if only they could hit Vladivostok and stoke and Eastern separation from Russia.
Living life, having my little intrusive thoughts in Bluewater, surrounded by all of the people in the world. You may think 'not me!'. But you'd be wrong. You are here. We all are. Milling about aimlessly in the heat. The reasons for being here lost in time. Panic your only friend. Thinking 'I'll just get a coffee', but it's a thousand pounds and your phone is nearly dead. Am I in hell? Almost certainly. Difficult to conceive of a worse punishment. What a way to find out. In a Krispy Kremes. Repent! Repent!
@TheBreadmonkey the only good reason to be at Bluewater is to visit the LEGO store 😂
The Dutch version of the BBC (very simply put) has started consistently stating in every article about Trump that he has a history of lying and saying nonsense. It's really satisfying.
"President Trump, who often lies, said that..."
It's a small thing, but it cheers me up.
TIL the word SPAM came from the SPAM skit by Monty Python!

@mattblaze also being able to make due with the existing gear is where real skill comes in.
Knowing your gear (and how to work it) however, does…
@kkarhan Of course. But that doesn't mean there aren't tools better suited to specific jobs.
Privacy Guides' Program Director @jonah gave an amazing speech last night in our weekly livestream!
It's a truly moving speech,
and an incredibly important statement in our current troubled times.

How many people here would be interested if I did a digital security/privacy advice blog somewhere?
It has been so long since I ran a #BSD that I don't even remember which BSD it was. (I could probably dig up that info...)
Circa 20 years ago I used to run BSD gateway/router machines.
I think I'd like to do this again, for a variety of reasons.
But which BSD should I run for this kind of network gateway. It won't host any applications, it won't be a NAS, it'll purely be network/gateway... it'll have the telco router on one side, internal network on another, and one or two DMZ/separate type networks (one for hosting external facing things like Mastodon, the other for untrusted IoT stuff.) It'll run dhcp, dns, and probably be a VPN endpoint.
I do not want to run some specialist gateway adapted customised thing with dashboards etc, just want a plain vanilla OS. (And no bullcrap like containers, docker, etc. Just an OS running on a physical box.)
So, what OS should I run on my network gateway: #OpenBSD, #FreeBSD, #NetBSD
@yvan I'd use OpenBSD or FreeBSD. The good thing is that, if you're using FreeBSD, you can make it read only in a very simple way: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2024/05/31/freebsd-tips-and-tricks-native-ro-rootfs/
@TheBreadmonkey Bluewater is forever etched into my memory because my eldest went through a phase when they were a toddler of wanting to push the buggy rather than riding in it, and their favourite thing in the world was to push their buggy round and round and round and round Bluewater.

👎️ Half of developers think gen AI is bad for the gaming industry
「 52 percent of respondents said that gen AI is having a “negative” impact on the games industry, versus just 7 percent who viewed the technology as “positive.” Perhaps most startling is how the negative outlook has grown over the years: in 2024, just 18 percent of those surveyed viewed the tech as a negative, and that number jumped to 30 percent in 2025. Now it’s up to more than half 」
@TheBreadmonkey
I've just done an evening solo parkrun because I was working today. Didn't feel like it because I haven't run in two weeks because I had a cold and it's harder if you haven't run for a while. Anyway, glad I did!
Your post reminded me of doing Kenilworth Half last autumn and everyone was cheering for this old guy who was running a bit in front of me. "Come on Gary!" "Great running Gary!" I thought he must be some kind of local legend.
