#Australia Completely Loses The Plot, Plans To Ban Kids From Watching #YouTube - https://www.techdirt.com/2025/08/06/australia-completely-loses-the-plot-plans-to-ban-kids-from-watching-youtube/ "The end result will be that Australia has basically taught a generation of teenagers not to trust the government, that their internet regulators are completely out of touch, and that laws are stupid."

Australia’s internet watchdog says social media firms are still "turning a blind eye” to online child sex abuse material on their platforms, singling out YouTube as having been unresponsive to its inquiries. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/08/06/tech/australia-regulator-youtube-child-abuse/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #tech #youtube #australia #socialmedia #children #childabuse #apple #google #alphabet #meta #snap #whatsapp

YO, SIGNAL BOOST THIS ⚠️🔁‼️⚠️

I'm archiving Youtube channels rn onto my collection of external HDs before the great August 13th purge/age check shit.

LET ME KNOW WHAT POTENTIALLY "NSFW"/QUEER CREATORS YALL WANNA SEE GET SAVED AND ARCHIVED!

Already got NyxFears and PhilosophyTube (as well as a lot of lowQ rips of a lot of other youtubers done before March 2025), also looking at WattsTheSafeword.

(forgot to make the last post public lol)

I continue to experiment with the new user interface for TVs, which I'm informed is -- for now -- "a test". It's quite the inconsistent train wreck. Outside of now burying the ability to visit a creator's channels in an utterly non-intuitive location deep in the UI, direct seeking behavior -- that is, jumping directly to a point on a video timeline with suitable touchpad or the like -- is utterly inconsistent -- along with the other anti-user, anti-creator changes I've previously mentioned.

The direct seek situation is simply bizarre. The new white timeline will go partially back to traditional red in some situations (especially already viewed content), but whether or not you can actually point and click to seek is chaotic. Most -- but not quite all -- of the featured YouTube Movies and TV shows now appear to block direct seeking, which is extremely anti-user. Some (small?) subset of films will still direct seek for now.

But even worse, I now see this same behavior on completely random videos from ordinary channels -- not just "official" YouTube movie/TV channels. Some will direct seek. Some won't. It's difficult to find the patterns, suggesting that to some extent at least the UI is actually broken at this point and should never have been foisted on users -- many of whom PAY quite a sum these days for YouTube Premium to avoid ad breaks.

This is no way to treat your YouTube viewers , particularly your paying ones.

Just a reminder to folks that I'm going to be talking with @freebliss tomorrow, July 31st at 1300 Eastern UTC-4.

This certainly isn't because I'm doing my show notes atm and doing research, but Simon's stuff is fantastic and I can't wait to show it off. Not just Simon's #developer #projects, but also Simon's #art.

Very excited to talk to Simon tomorrow! Everyone make sure to let me know any questions you have for Simon and/or stop by the Livestream! Catch the VOD or Fedicast afterwards!

Australia said it will add YouTube to sites covered by its world-first ban on social media for teenagers, reversing an earlier decision to exempt the video-sharing site. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/07/30/asia-pacific/society/australia-youtube-teen-social-media-ban/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #asiapacific #society #australia #socialmedia #children #youtube
