A month ago, my chilld's father survived a terrifying accident. We are very lucky that he was able to walk away—but our car was utterly totaled, and now we're unable to replace it. I am a genderfluid, queer writer providing full-time childcare to our 9-month-old infant. I am also launching Impure Leftist, a newsletter that aims to help the disparate factions of the American left create resilient coalitions for lasting change in the face of fascism and climate despair. While we did receive an insurance payout for the car, it won't cover the replacement cost of a reliable used vehicle in the current market. Plus, most of that check ended up paying our rent due to lost work from injuries sustained in the car accident... and that rent is about to go up, too. Unfortunately, we don't have the credit scores that would help us access affordable car loans. So this one calamity has knocked down a row of dominoes leading to increasingly stressful situations for our family.
