On my way to successfully achieve my first Mastodon full install, I met a unfortunate 403 error than I can't seem to fix.
If there are any #MastoAdmin ninjas around, any advice on this would be more than welcome! Thank you!
Ok so...
I have a vps ovh with arch installed on it. Problem is : systemd freeze at startup and so the boot sequence fails. I can however still boot in rescue mode and try and fix things up.
I already installed linux-lts and I'm currently booting on it.
I can't find recent logs. Does anybody have a few pointer to help me fix this?
My best guess is the problem is somehow linked to systemd or a missing firmware package, but since I can't find the startup logs I don't know what to try.

When #OVH states their event is held entirely in English but then you come to the two hour keynote and it's entirely in French without any bullet points or subtitles. So that was a damn lie. Hardest listening comprehension exercise of this year.
Very French, I'll have to make sure to take @to along next time.
Man, I love Arch, but updates shouldn't break your vps like that...
This is annoying. Debugging my boot using ovh rescue mode is terrible.
So apparently the problem is that Swich Root fails. I have no idea what that means, how to fix it or even why it happens. This vps has been working fine for a long time now and I find nothing in arch news that seems relevent.
And search has been less than successful so far.
The good news is that I have nothing not backed up on this vps. Well maybe a minetest and a Valheim server but I'm not even really using them, so I don't care.
I'd rather not have to deal with all the syncthing cleanup though...

An update about the #OVH situation (they deleted my VPS without warning because it was DDOS'd and that "violated their Tos").
I had subscribed to a basic VPS plan for 6 months and paid a setup fee. Since I had only used their service for ONE DAY before the VPS was terminated (without any warnings), I asked if I could be refunded for the 5 extra months I had paid for. See, I was elegant enough to take a hit for the first month and the installation fee. Well well well they responded (in French, translated in English):
"We understand your desire for more information, but as this breach of contract is due to a failure to comply with the terms and conditions of use, no refund for the remaining months can be considered."
Then they linked to a page with the terms of service which is so hard to read because it's inside a frame. Stellar customer service, I tell you!
Beware of #OVHCloud! Never again.
MAJOR Plot twist!
I'm sure you're having a better morning than me because I was greeted with an email from #OVH (the VPS provider) that started with "Hello Mr. Rossini" and informed me that the VPS was stopped because they suspected a hack - and it will be permanently deleted. "Now let us know Mr. Rossini if you'd like to purchase a new VPS plan."
30 Euros* for 4 hours of VPS experimentation with Docker! YAY (not!)
(*30 Euros corresponded to a 6-month plan, sigh)
I received ZERO advanced warnings... #OVHCloud simply deleted my VPS because of "unusual activity" and proposed I buy a new one.
I had installed #Fail2Ban on it first thing yesterday morning, but I suppose changing 0.0.0.0 with my VPS's IP4 address in one of the Docker settings... to connect it to Docker GUI did it for me.
You live, you learn.
I will stay away from OVH Cloud.
(Yes I had tried creating an account with Hetzer and NetCup before but they had a convoluted signup process and wanted too much personal info/docs, so I had given up and turned to OVH. My bad).
What will I do now?
Find a new VPS provider.
Feeling salty about the 30 Euros I spent for 6 months with OVH but honestly I feel like I dodged a bullet. I had nothing installed on the VPS, except for Fail2Ban and basic Docker. Imagine how catastrophic it would have been if they had deleted my VPS without warning if I had important stuff on it! Shivering at the thought.
Onwards and upwards, more humble than ever, with infinite respect for sysadmins 🙏

Dear Fedi friends,
I've been a little quiet on this account because I'd been pouring all my energy into setting up a new VPS as a testing ground to learn #Docker.
I need to become proficient in Docker ASAP in order to move my Ghost CLI site there (if I want it to federate).
The past 48 hours have been a real rollercoaster ride, as you could read on my GoToSocial account @elena.
Please beware of #OVH! They terminated my VPS without any notice: https://aseachange.com/@elena/statuses/01K35V57PPWH29969DSTC1117A 😵💫

So, #OVH has started hosting a lot of spammers with the usual "we did not collect this information, you must have given it to us voluntarily" on 79.137.20.0/26 (at least) so I have blacklisted 79.137.0.0/17 pre-emptively…
So far I have seen inerofio-expert.com and some other attempts which didn't pass the basic filtering with SpamHaus.

I think the @BoxyBSD project is one of the best ideas for the #opensource community. Providing real and completely free #VPS instances ( #VMs) with #IPv6 is really great for testing and learning.
I really love this project and if you are into #FreeBSD or any other #BSD this might be interesting for you. Just as it is also a #free alternative to bigger hostels like #Hetzner #OVH or #Netcup. I really love the philosophy and idea behind it
