i should make a scale of computer literacy, starting with "doesn't know how to turn on the computer" and "doesn't know how to maximize windows" and ending with "can desolder and replace broken motherboard components" and "fluent in assembly"
Any C++ engineers want to work on #EuroOffice? 🙂

Bonus thread for today...
Text is only native to programming to the extent that we tend to write our programs in plain text. Though early home computers had I/O which natively spoke ASCII, or something extremely close.
I've designed a hypothetical computer which natively processes text!
An entire string string library would be hardwired circuits, or close enough! Including ASCII character classification, Unicode would be implemented in software in part so it can be updated.
1/3?
For text input... Physical keyboards remain the simplest & most ergonomic solution!
Even if converting the pressed keys into ASCII then UTF-8 text requires a conversion pass or 2. The 2nd pass might need some additional UI to show what's happening.
If you're editing text, there's nuances around the arrow keys to get straight.
Though yes, we could support other text-entry mechanisms. For instance we could use machine learning to convert your verbal speech into text, might need an NPU.
2/4?
too late, OpenAI https://openai.com/index/where-the-goblins-came-from/
@codinghorror they just don't get that foolish consistency is hobgoblin all their brainz.
Hey #WebDev I need to recommend some web developers to a bunch of small business clients. I'd want the web developer to specialize in #Accessibility across a wide array of industries. Can you put your resume links in the replies? #Shopify knowledge is a bonus, especially if you designed your own, accessibility ready, Shopify theme. A *LOT* of these folk use Shopify. #A11y
I have a Product Manager friend looking for a new PM role. I’m trying to convince him to #GetFediHired on #Mastodon.
#ProductManagement folks, where should my friend be looking/engaging for a new PM role in #SanFrancisco or #SFBA, hybrid or remote?
This one is a bit of a long shot #getfedihired but here we go. I'm writing up a job description for an experienced (4+ years mgmt please) software engineering manager for a backend team (services, APIs, infrastructure).
We'd like to hire locally for this one, but the role is fully wfh remote. Looking in #Victoria (ideal), on the island, or #Vancouver (BC, Canada). #yyj #yvr
If you like #edm (or music in general) and live in the area... DM me to get a head start.... the role will be posted live in a couple weeks.
@jacksonhayes I believe Backblaze lets you set an encryption key that they don’t have access to, so your backups are encrypted, and even Backblaze can’t access them.
@siracusa wasn't aware they had that feature! Thanks!
I am trapped. Don’t send help 🐈⬛
finally, dating advice from the true experts https://tech.slashdot.org/story/26/05/06/2050205/googles-ai-search-results-will-now-turn-to-reddit-for-expert-advice?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed
By now you've all probably heard about the latest shenanigans from Google and their love for in-browser AI features (if you don't, this is the story: https://www.theverge.com/tech/924933/google-chrome-4gb-gemini-nano-ai-features).
Our team has been inspecting the Chromium code and disabling stuff from the very first version of Vivaldi (we have some posts about this in our blog, such as https://vivaldi.com/blog/news/alert-no-google-topics-in-vivaldi/ or https://vivaldi.com/blog/no-google-vivaldi-users-will-not-get-floced/).
We've also been very outspoken about our dislike of the built-in AI trend in the browser industry, but in case there's still any doubts: yes, we disable all Gemini-related features, and we've been doing it for a while.
@Vivaldi When I mentioned the news someone said "are you sure Opera isn't doing that too?” I said (unprovoked) well I know that Vivaldi isn't 😊I didn't know how right I was! Thanks!
A whole story in one photo
@sundogplanets
I love that the ducks appear to have, in fact, effectively hidden themselves. 😅
looks like the stripe migration worked as intended - the only problem is that existing subscribers will not get an automatic refund when if they cancel their current subscription, because technically, there was no payment made via this new stripe account, so there's nothing to refund, I’ll have to do it manually - if they renew their subscription and then decide they want to cancel that one, they'll get an automatic refund as a payment would have been made in that stripe account (and of course, new customers can cancel and get a refund automatically)
@decryption
congrats on making it through that bullshit
I am *crying*
This is humanity''s greatest achievement and proof that our species is at the pinnacle of evolution.
increasingly clear that when tech nerds refer to "AGI" they just mean trying to invent a type of girl who will like them
Some optimism as a counterweight to, well, everything.
