Let me introduce myself: I'm Mohsen. I have a PhD in AI from TU Delft and I teach ML. These days I build autonomous drones and the AI that runs them, mostly for greenhouses and indoor farms.
I've mostly stayed off social media, but the Fediverse feels different: no algorithm deciding what you see, no company optimising for your outrage. So I'm giving Mastodon a try.

And todays gadget solar is this bench spotted outside Halle (Saale) Hbf. Whilst not quite as bonkers an idea as solar between the tracks (see previous rant). The extra ruggedisation required for the panels to make them suitable for sitting on seems an expensive way of doing solar. I find myself wondering if a larger panel that acted as a shade for the seating would not be a better option.

On the recent Telstra outage, looks like there are/will be few if any consequences. ABC reports:
“The Telstra incident has led to further questions about what more the government could do to protect customers from future outages.
“Senator Hanson-Young said tougher regulations were needed.
“"There's no right to compensation for customers or penalties on the companies for failed mobile phone service," she said.

We find that in research on giving retractions and replications are less common than in research in other fields, and that statistical errors are more common. About 60% of replications yield similar conclusions as preceding studies. Previous findings on material benefits and social rewards for giving are less likely to replicate, while findings on material costs and solicitation are more likely to replicate.
In the interest of a robust knowledge base for fundraising, we call for more replications and we suggest that journals adopt registered reports - in principle acceptance of publication before results are known - as a solution to publication bias. We find that the more replicable mechanisms are material costs and solicitation, while replications indicate that material benefits and reputation do not work as we wrote previously.
In a new preprint with Max Littel, Stephanie Koolen-Maas, PhD, Dr Hoda Fahimpour, Arthur Gautier and Wahideh Achbari, we're revisiting the eight mechanisms in charitable giving that Pamala Wiepking and I summarized in 2007. The data is clear: Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average. While some use lies to distract us, the reality is that the next climate refugees will be us: families in Spain, Portugal, or Italy forced to flee because it is simply too hot.
