I may be the last person to figure this out, but in case I'm not:

My Mastodon browser tab started making an irregular, infrequent beeping sound a few weeks ago, despite my having turned off notification sounds literally years ago.

Turns out the latest Mastodon version (which added quoting) also added a new category of notification sounds that's ON BY DEFAULT when you're quoted.

There's a switch to disable it in the settings on the notifications tab.

Wiltzie began composing and recording the music on his own and dabbled with combining his music with Vantzou’s videos...The music is similar to that of Stars of the Lid: long, droning, and ambient soundscapes, and reminiscent of the film music of Zbigniew Preisner and Georges Delerue. However, the songs on the album are shorter, and lyrics can be heard at times, unlike Stars of the Lid's songs which are exclusively instrumental. I managed to snap about two hours of 10 second images from a dry lake last night, between 10pm and midnight.

This is all of them compressed into a time lapse, with the stars rotating around the south celestial pole.

Other than the horizon being weirdly bright and there being a *hint* of a vertical pillar from time to time, this was pretty much not naked eye visible.

Nikon D750, ISO8000, Nikkor 14-24 F2.8 lens at 24mm f/4, 553 x 10s.
