It’s not much to look at, only four minutes of data and with a tree in the way, but it’s mine.

The Rosette Nebula 🌹
You guessed it, it’s a gassy region forming new stars! I used my new narrowband filters to image this, which gave me data in red, deep red, and cyan.
That meant “interpreting” the data into something that looks pretty, by mapping them onto red, green and blue in different ways.
There are two attempts. The first one using more or less the pallette used for Hubble images, the other a classic “SHO” mapping for sulphur, hydrogen, oxygen onto red, green and blue.
I didn’t get much sulphur data because clouds, so the red channel is very weak in that one. The other one uses a formula to mix sulphur and hydrogen data for the red, so it gets brighter and yellower.

Dancing Lights 💃🏻🪩🕺🏻
I managed to snap about two hours of 10 second images from a dry lake last night, between 10pm and midnight.
This is all of them compressed into a time lapse, with the stars rotating around the south celestial pole.
Other than the horizon being weirdly bright and there being a *hint* of a vertical pillar from time to time, this was pretty much not naked eye visible.
Nikon D750, ISO8000, Nikkor 14-24 F2.8 lens at 24mm f/4, 553 x 10s.

Growing Green
We chose a safe, off-road parking spot to observe the #aurora. As I began to photograph, a car approached from behind us and lit the tree beside me.
The result was almost the same shape as the developing aurora.
The yellowish glow on the horizon is a group of farms beyond the hill.

Áróra
In Norse mythology the #aurora were the armour and weapons of the Valkyrie. The word is derived from Old Norse Valkyrja ("Chooser of the Slain") who guide the souls of the battle-slain to Odin's hall Valhalla.
In Finland, a fox was thought to have created the aurora, its bushy tail throwing sparks into the sky.
Scottish legend refers to the lights as “Merry Dancers” engaged in battle.

In The Beginning
A Bortle 3¹ area, and we're aurora hunting. Thinking that we weren't going to be lucky because the KP forecast was very low, we decided to take some landscape shots of the small farms and the stunning starry sky.
What we didn't know was that Lady Aurora had begun, very faintly, to smile on us.
Then the show began.

So thrilled to realize that the German Astronomical Society ✨ @GermanAstroSoc ✨ has sneaked into the Fediverse last week!
Greetings 🥳
Let's make them welcome, shall we? Go ahead and start following them if you're interested in astronomy at all, and boost their introduction post above so everyone can know about this exciting new arrival.
I personally think this is huge, so let's make this work for them 🚀
I am also sure they will in turn be able to lure even more astronomers here, and we'd all love that, wouldn't we?

We are the German Astronomical Society (Astronomische Gesellschaft, AG)—one of Europe’s oldest astronomical associations, founded in 1863 and currently welcoming around 800 members.
Our mission includes organizing annual scientific meetings, fostering public outreach, supporting young astronomers, and encouraging astronomy education.

"She whispers, the aurora,
In hues of spectral beauty,
Her voice a cosmic sigh
Echoing through the eternal night.
In the quietude, she sings,
Her melody a celestial hymn,
A serenade of light
Resounding in the polar silence."
