The ball in the fish's mouth represents 'bonnō' (煩悩), bad mental states (such as greed, jealousy and ignorance) that cloud one's mind.
Hitting the kaipan helps the fish 'spit out' the 'bonnō', the sound reminding the monks of their spiritual duties.

The layout of Manpuku-ji's structures and grounds is said to represent the abstract body of a dragon...the buildings and corridors its limbs, the paths its spine and scales, and the pond its gaping mouth.

immernoch primär mit #zen unterwegs :)
2024's zen phrase was inspired by the October full moon, celebrated as one of the most beautiful in Japan.
As the event coincides with 'jūsanya' (十三夜), guests are invited to enjoy the "pines illuminated by the bright moon"...

I want to explore some thoughts around Margaret Killjoy’s well-known dictum “Deëscalate all conflict that isn’t with the enemy,” Carl Schmitt and “The Concept of the Political,” constructions of opposition in Taoism and Zen Buddhism, and the pragmatics of resistance in a time of fascism...but later on today, after coffee.
OK, this is going to be a *very* long thread, for which I hope you’ll forgive me. I’ll repost it shortly, all in one place, where you can consider and weigh what I’m trying to get at more organically, but I want to lay this all out here first. Here we go:
I first picked up Robert Aitken’s slim book “Taking the Path of #Zen” as a student just starting my sitting practice, some thirty-one years ago. It feels as clear and as generous now as it did the day I came to it. I hope you find it useful. https://nnty.fun/downloads/books/TAEL/SELF%20IMPROVEMENT/MEDITATION/CONTEMPLATIVE%20MEDITATION/ZAZEN/INTERMEDIATE/Taking%20the%20Path%20of%20Zen%20-%20Robert%20Aitken%20%281982%29.pdf
Hi folks - I would like to find some accessible beginner friendly guided #zen #meditation practices to try, ideally on YouTube.
Can you recommend any? I have been searching and so many seem to take a wellbeing-coach type approach (eg Headspace) and use zen in the colloquial way....
Thanks!
The Good part of using #zen browser is to have Matrix and Mastodon opened side by side in split view.

"Oppression is never justified and it is not destined. When those with power oppress others, this injustice should be resisted and transformed. The changing nature of life’s circumstances is not an excuse to avoid actively responding to and disrupting social injustice, to sidestep our responsibility to speak up.
When we can do something to change things, we must."

Was Gandhi Zen? The Japanese Buddhist tradition may jive with some of the Indian activist’s beliefs, in spite of its martial connotations. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/07/19/japan/history/gandhi-nonviolence-suzuki-zen/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #history#mohandasgandhi #india #indiajapanrelations #wwii #zen #zenbuddhism #daisetztsuzuki #japanesethought
