@MikeInTheGarden and what a beaut she is!
We appreciate Edwin Kremer’s thoughtful reflections on 'Integrated by Design" by Vivian Voss.
It’s encouraging to see the FreeBSD design philosophy articulated so clearly: coherence, predictability, least astonishment, and long-term stability.
For those curious about the architectural differences between FreeBSD and Linux and why they matter in practice, this book offers both philosophical context and hands-on exploration.
Thank you to Vivian Voss.
The change comes as arXiv and others struggle to manage an influx of AI-generated materials masquerading as rigorous science.

Superb. 🤩✌️😎
@jonhicks you should have posted this with a content warning because now I want a mini pistachio magnum.
@bastianallgeier @jonhicks !!! 🤤
I hear some of you are turned off/frustrated with Raycast trying to do too much at once instead of being a simple launcher, and to y'all I say: check out my alternative @tinystartapp :tinystart: 😌
It's a tiny launcher for macOS, focused on the essentials: apps, URLs, folders, web searches, and emoji — all for just €5 (pay once, no subscriptions!)
@nileane @tinystartapp got it a few days ago. Had a. Rief moment of FOMO seeing the Raycast 2 announcement. But quickly remembered that I am very happy with TinyQpp cause it’s all I need and want. Don’t give in to hype FOMO :)

Was nutzt ihr was könnt ihr empfehlen?

@vschoenleben Sowas vielleicht? https://stadt-bremerhaven.de/typewhisper-fuer-macos-diktat-und-transkription-mit-lokalen-ki-modellen/
Bzw. welches Betriebssystem? Das da ist für Mac. Aber da Whisper als Modell auch lokal gut läuft, gibt es tausende Apps dieser Art. 😊 Besondere Feature-Wünsche?
"We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/
The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/
Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/"

Good stuff. If you can't be trusted to proof-read your own papers to check it doesn't contain ridiculous out-of-place material from an LLM (nor if you trust genAI to correctly give you references when even today it's known to make up details) then how do we know you could stand up in a seminar and present the work and take appropriate credit for it? Speaking from a mathematics pov here, where even for jointly-authored papers, all authors get equal credit are are assumed to at least know and understand a substantial portion of the mathematics if not 100% of it.

After a decade of banning bottom trawling, Scotland’s South Arran Marine Protected Area has seen seabed life triple.
New data shows billions of organisms are returning to the seafloor, rebuilding biodiverse "animal forests" that help store carbon and restore long-lost marine life.
