Question. I keep hearing some people say that this AI bubble is like the dotcom bubble, but that from the dotcom bubble we eventually got infrastructure for today's internet. But, was the dotcom thing opposed by people? Was it technology that grew organically from genuine demand or was it a few companies forcing it down on everyone? I would like to hear from someone more knowledgeable on these things on the claim that this bubble will pave the way for #ai

Last night I fell asleep listening to the latest episode of the Vergecast, which covered the #GooglePixel 10 phone & how it’s « AI stuffed ».

What did I dream about?

That I was browsing AI-generated photos on my phone. They seemed pointless and absurd (like: a mini car sitting on a car seat).

Then a white overlay appeared on screen, showing the energy consumption it took to generate the photos.

I remember screaming when I read « 100 liters » (22 gallons)… and then I woke up 😐

To follow-up on my previous toot, knowing how anxious Gen Z and Gen Alpha are about the environmental catastrophe, I think that a lot of youngsters would think twice about using AI tools so frequently... if they knew about the energy consumption involved in their activities (esp. water to cool down data centers).

A text overlay guessing energy consumption for each prompt would be a game changer (as unrealistic as it sounds).

That's just me and my brain's nighttime activity 🥲

…Artists have always stolen from other artists. I have done so. In the creative world it’s one facet of what we call ‘inspiration’.

Remixing is what culture does.

The key differences in the era of degenerative LLMs are scale and speed. It’s an accelerant.

It’s a heightening of the mismatch between what capitalism wants and the grain of the internet.

Capitalism profits from controlled scarcity. The internet wants everything connected: engineered abundance

Important thoughts on what genAI / LLMs do to us, thank you.

Love the term "degenerative LLM"!

I'm still looking for the right hashtags to identify this strand of reflection. #noAI#noLLM#antiAI#antiLLM#antiGenAI#degenerativeAI#degenerativeLLM ?

To elaborate - Patreon is testing the waters via survey to see how much pushback they might get if they tried rolling out AI (again, IIRC). These were sent randomly to some creators, but not all. The link works for anyone that has a Patreon so….if you hate AI (uncommon as that is in creators) this is your chance to shine.

A thoughtful set of reflections, thank you. You urge us (and yourself) to accept that we live in an era of impurity, and to look out for the good strands in the work of those who submit to the evils of genAI.

I will try to learn from your reflections. Not sure whether I can accept those flirtations with the genAI devil. For me the key word is not Purity but Authenticity. Personal authenticity, human agency, personhood --- these are under unprecedented attack and people seem to enjoy it and celebrate it. But you are right, each of us is one big mess of contradictions and I must remain open to those around me.

I have always been a follower of Martin Buber's contradistinction of "I and Thou" vs "It and He". First and second person, not third and third person. Those who understood this distinction have always been in a minority, so perhaps the current moral catastrophy is just part of an ongoing forever-catastrophy!

One of my recurring sensibilities over the past year or so is that there is no purity to be had.

And in a culture as impure as ours that’s in the process of falling apart, and remixing chaotically, there will be a lot more effluent floating about.

So one of the things I’m trying not to do is to write people off because of what I perceive to be one bad idea.

With a few notable execrable exceptions who seemingly have nothing but bad ideas mastodon.social/@urlyman/11503
