If I were running #Canberra ...
I'd have a fleet of paddleboats so that workers in the parliamentary triangle could paddle across Lake Burley Griffin from Civic, whilst the main Commonwealth Avenue Bridge is having work done to it.
@troberts oh! Maybe the bridge closure could have been our opportunity to have a ferry system!
Bus, Tram, Ferry!

I recently got a new Thinkpad P14S. It is a nice computer for sure, but I think it is time to focus on the software side as well. Computers come with software and the software experience matters!
Some things I think should be covered in a review:
1. What OS does the machine come with? Having a choice would be nice, such as a Windows & Linux choice. Even better if you can test both before making a choice.
2. What software does the machine come with, both good and bad. If the machine comes with useful software, then that is great! Does it offer a choice of browsers?
3. Is it possible to get rid of all the bad stuff and how long does it take?
4. Does the machine allow local accounts? Does it force or trick you into using online services?
5. Does the machine have opt-in or opt-out of AI or does it force feed it?
6. Does the machine make it easy to switch OS after the fact?
I am sure I am not the only one that cares about stuff like this. When you buy a piece of hardware, it is to run software and making it easy to run the software you want should be what hardware makes should focus on, in addition to building great hardware.
@jon My Lenovo laptop came with Windows but somehow it locked me out so I installed OpenSuse and I am happy to be free of Windows. Everything is working and I can play some old games using Scumm.

several people reporting lately that #deltachat has become their main app: They are now spending more time in the chats, also with web apps, than in any other app. It may be a turn to more private communications when social media has become more toxic, obnoxious and dangerous in many places?
#deltachat and #chatmail.is indeed about being readily available when other forms of communications become unavailable or dangerous like in Iran or Russia but also in western and other countries.
I was so upset when I found out I had been cloned.
I was beside myself.
@span davidgerard @span theogrin @span mdavis @span firefoxwebdevs I fixed it.

Keep this in mind when people claim cars mean business — closing Central #Madrid to cars over holidays resulted in a 9.5% boost in retail spending on its main shopping street: STUDY.
There was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

"To no small extent, the library profession has struggled to respond to these efforts. One of the limitations in the ability to respond successfully thus far has been how the profession is framing the censorship movement. Librarians are responding to the specific books being censored, but the censors are focused instead on the people that these books literally represent." 😭

What principles you wish to see social networks (or the fediverse) adopt in their design?
For example, for me, here are some things I wish to see (or would implement in my design) :
- design around ease of self-hosting. A non technical user must be able to self host easily and at a very low cost.
- Embrace content sorting and filtering algorithms, but on the client side, with optional control by the user.
- Standardize tags on all content. So many of the different ways different platforms classify or organize content can be implemented as tags, which increases interoperability between them.
- Abandon obsession with real-time-first implementations for use cases that don’t explicitly need it.
- Transferable user identity (between instances)
- User identity and authentication as separate service from social network instance
Would love to hear yours!
