Not only did I exit Apple in February (My first computer in 1993 and all since were Apple made) I've started a program at my local library to help others exit big tech, save money and continue using older hardware. Computing without #Apple, #Google, #Microsoft is entirely possible. Using #GNU#Linux#FreeSoftware has been a better #computing experience.

We can help one another do this. We do actually have a choice. They do not get to control everything. Make the effort.

@marcoarment I'd been using Apple hardware since 1993 and made the decision to exit the Apple ecosystem back in February and I'm glad I did. Anyone can do it. Same for Google and Amazon. Didn't use Microsoft.

Computing is entirely possible without them. It takes a bit of effort to detangle from iCloud, etc but it's well worth it.

GNU/Linux is much better than I'd previously thought. It's actually been fantastic.

@tekphloyd No, that would be wasteful. But we can absolutely, 100%, talk about Apple more realistically as a capitalist enterprise that is all about profit.

Get real about it. And begin a real migration away from their products. It's totally doable. I started in February and Apple went from my only hardware/OS to my back-up. Paid iCloud is now free base iCloud. All data local. The others are no better.

WE/YOU can take real control of your computing.

FUCK #Apple#Google#Microsoft#Amazon

@tekphloyd I've written a series on the process of migrating from Apple to GNU/Linux. Apple users seem to have a very out-of-date perspective of the quality of the Free Software ecosystem. I know I did.

Not only is it doable but in the end users not only save a lot of money but have far more control over their data and their computing life. Honestly, it feels fantastic to be free of their shit.

A few years earlier, Richard Stallman (RMS) had objected to ever saying “BusyBox/Linux”. RMS eventually conceded (after much debate) that one could say “BusyBox/Linux” if (& only if) one proved that no #GNU code appeared in the product.

After winning that argument, I asked RMS to please correct the places he called systems “GNU/Linux” that had #Linux but no #GNU in them.

RMS refused saying (paraphrased) that GNU was being harmed by “these confusions”, not Linux, so there was no need.

Response to a troll for the opportunity to say publicly why — in 2015 — I stopped saying “GNU/Linux”:

I say “Linux-based systems” — which I also recommended for SFC's stylesheet.

I ceased saying “ga-new-slash-lynn-ox” when Richard Stallman (RMS) chastised me for saying “Linux” (but not “GNU”) in a post about VMWares #GPL violation. I had mentioned GNU GPL; no GNU software was in their product.

RMS told me I harmed #GNU every time I didn't footnote the word “Linux” & explain GNU/Linux.

I have something else to be thankful for today. At this moment in time I am busy restoring functionality on systems so that I will be able to resume important remote tasks, which shall enable me to restore the level that I am used to, when it comes down to actual value of goods

This work is highly specialized and needs a set of computing systems, communication systems which use GSM messaging systems and other means of signalling, in order to properly Act, monitor react and deploy the remote systems, of which a set of those are managed deployed monitored and configured through Proxmox.

@gyptazy has made incredibly wonderful contributions to the community of Open Source and I'm specifically highlighting his work in for example the great Proxmox load balancer.

Through the Work Of Him and other hundreds to thousands nameless Open Source coders, programmers en hackers am I able to do this work.

I am fortunate enough to have virtually met him here on the FediVerse through a beautiful forward that @stefano has made, who also makes great contributions in Open Source

Without the work of these incredible people none of this would have been possible. I would be sitting watching this beautiful scenery that I would have made myself with props

There would not be any Open Source Operating Systems, plural, driving the displays.

Being Grateful is important. Giving Thanks sends a beautifully Modulated Pulse of Energy, through the Universe to everyone.

I am thankful to you all

"It’s been five months since I set-up my local files “cloud” and I thought I’d write a short update. I’ve made a few changes but, in short, it’s been a great experience with zero issues.

My initial cloud was going to be syncing between the LinuxMini and an M1 MacMini. I initially expected to continue using the iPad for computing while out on the porch, working off of files on the Mac that would then sync to the LinuxMini...

🥳 New Kitten Release

To GNU tar or not to GNU tar?

• Installing Kitten on Linux should no longer display a screenful of gibberish from the tar command.

You see, macOS, being special, includes BSD tar, not GNU tar, and adds a bunch of Mac-specific metadata and extended header keywords to archives that GNU tar on Linux machines then chokes on and regurgitates onto your screen as warnings.

With this release, Kitten’s packaging script expects GNU tar to be available on macOS and uses that instead of BSD tar.

The latest release of Kitten now installs without any warnings on Linux (at least on my Fedora Silverblue box).

Enjoy!

@thomholwerda The snobbery espoused by Apple enthusiasts that go on about the supposed high quality of Apple's visual design is pretty ridiculous at this point.

As an Apple user of decades recently upgraded to GNU/Linux Trisquel with KDE Plasma and Mint with Cinnamon I'm embarrassed at how uninformed I was as to the quality of the design over here.

#Apple folk, step outside of your echo chamber and have an honest look at the quality of the alternatives.

@iscarlosmolero I'm a new GNU/Linux user, just 5 months. I'm sharing my enthusiasm here, with blog posts and have set-up project at our little library in a nearby town to help folks upgrade. Doing a "Intro to GNU/Linux" presentation next month and offering training on using Free Software like LibreOffice, etc.

So, my answer would be organize a project and volunteer. Libraries are a great place for this.

Whatever OS you’re currently using, Mac, Windows or GNU/Linux, there is a large ecosystem of free/libre software for you to tap into when you’re ready to get started. Every proprietary app you can replace is more control you have over your computing than you had before. In a world of oligarchs and corporate giants it may seem like our personal decisions and actions are unimportant, that our ability to have an impact are...
