@NebulaTide @jkn Unfortunately, switching to alternatives is simply not enough; we also need to be unavailable on SMS, Whatsapp and other proprietary platforms.

Using a data SIM on #LinuxMobile, I have managed to onboard many people, over a hundred, to #FOSS messengers. Before when I preached freedom and #privacy, there'd always be resistance. Now people just accept that WA, SMS, etc are simply not an option and they readily hop on to alternatives if they need to reach me.

Another nice surprise! A careful discussion and appreciation of our almost 8-year long running efforts, and its #deltachat and #chatmail artifacts. The "Signal contingency plan" comes complete with podcast, website and zine!

A few things #deltachat apps are doing positively different from #Signal apps

- easiest onboarding ever; not depending on phone numbers or other private data

- support for multiple chat profiles/identities

- decentralized servers, not depending on US-based GAFAM etc.

- migration from one app/platform to any other

- easy multi-device support for any chat profile

- developers have chances to get their PRs merged :)

- mini-apps support via https://webxdc.org

I'm using it for years and since some time primarily with a chat mail account.

It's instant, has no spam and just working as intended. It keeps working with unreliable and really slow networks, chatmail relays have a TTL of 60 seconds, iirc.

Adding a seperate device or backing up your account is as easy as it gets. All supported platforms are treated equally.

Webxdc apps are awesome and have no internet access of themselves. For example I use a shopping list with my partner.

There is experimental videochat support if this is your cup of tea.

Right now they are working on seperating your identity from your account. This is the basis of the planned multitransport feature. Meaning your message is sent to multiple relays and if at least one arrives, your messages gets delivered.

Please don't think of email when you think of Deltachat. It uses email for transport, although its not classic email. The devs are working hard to reduce metadata and implement the features of DC within the encrypted part.

Just reading up on #DeltaChat and it does look interesting as a possible signal alternative. Even deploying your own relay seems easy too. Anybody here using it and has any positive feedback ? I mean share if you've negative too as it'll all be gratefully received by all.

Shout out to #deltachat for being what I loved about telegram: clean ui from IM, without any bs. Better yet, it's the only app (apart from signal) I think I can trust with securing important communications in heavily censorship-crippled parts of the internet.
