Not only did I exit Apple in February (My first computer in 1993 and all since were Apple made) I've started a program at my local library to help others exit big tech, save money and continue using older hardware. Computing without #Apple, #Google, #Microsoft is entirely possible. Using #GNU#Linux#FreeSoftware has been a better #computing experience.

We can help one another do this. We do actually have a choice. They do not get to control everything. Make the effort.

@tekphloyd No, that would be wasteful. But we can absolutely, 100%, talk about Apple more realistically as a capitalist enterprise that is all about profit.

Get real about it. And begin a real migration away from their products. It's totally doable. I started in February and Apple went from my only hardware/OS to my back-up. Paid iCloud is now free base iCloud. All data local. The others are no better.

WE/YOU can take real control of your computing.

FUCK #Apple#Google#Microsoft#Amazon

@tekphloyd I've written a series on the process of migrating from Apple to GNU/Linux. Apple users seem to have a very out-of-date perspective of the quality of the Free Software ecosystem. I know I did.

Not only is it doable but in the end users not only save a lot of money but have far more control over their data and their computing life. Honestly, it feels fantastic to be free of their shit.

Another reason to use the GPL software license, over MIT or BSD

In short, GPL uses copyright law to protect you, as an author of software, from exploitation better than MIT or BSD software licenses do. Here we have a case of the Anthropic corporation using MIT-licensed code in one of their software products, which is of course a for-profit product. The original author of that code received no compensation, as it is not required by the license. So the author applied for a job at Anthropic, and ironically, Anthropic responded with an AI-generated rejection letter. Corporations like Anthropic seem to have an allergy to GPL-licensed code however, due to the nature of how the GPL license grants much more specific rights and restrictions, both to the authors of the code, and the companies who use it.

Of course, nowadays LLMs can ingest GPL and MIT/BSD licensed code and spit it back out in altered form, essentially letting the makers of the LLM profit from your work without compensating you, so the GPL is probably due for an “upgrade” to prevent use for AI training. Unfortunately thanks to regulatory capture, and not-so-impartial courts of law mostly ignoring copyright law nowadays, it might not even be possible to use GPL or copyright to protect authors of software anymore. Probably a whole new legal framework is required first, and I don’t think this will be happening any time soon.

I guess it's a Photoahot screenshot 🤔
If confirmed, as EU promotes #freesoftware you could have used a GIMP or other free software screenshot.

Leftist, anti-fascist activists have got to begin making more of an effort to educate themselves about the spyware capitalist tech that they insist on continuing to use. From Substack, gmail, twitter, facebook to youtube, etc. At least make the effort to use and encourage others to use the alternatives. Make an active effort to migrate away from the spyware to the free/libre alternatives that respect users, privacy and democracy. It's an UPGRADE.

This month I'm donating to xUnit ( @xunit), the flagship unit-testing framework for .NET Core. I'm always grateful for how easy unit testing is in .NET, and xUnit's simple, predictable, organized approach is a big part of that.

Big thanks to @bradwilson for taking such good care of xUnit. It's a delight.

What open source projects are you grateful for today? I'd love to hear about them, whether or not you're donating this time around.

"It’s been five months since I set-up my local files “cloud” and I thought I’d write a short update. I’ve made a few changes but, in short, it’s been a great experience with zero issues.

My initial cloud was going to be syncing between the LinuxMini and an M1 MacMini. I initially expected to continue using the iPad for computing while out on the porch, working off of files on the Mac that would then sync to the LinuxMini...
