Recently got to talk about my experience running Ubuntu on an OG Surface Go. TL;DW: surprisingly good, Linux can still be a little clunky, but LLMs make CLI stuff way less intimidating for newbies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN2rZSKslAU&t=94s https://mranthropology.micro.blog/2025/11/20/running-ubuntu-on-a-surface.html

Morgen: Schulstreik gegen Wehrpflicht.

@net_gremlin that would be asking for too much. I'm pretty sure there's a ticket in the backlog saying exactly that:
> use s/mime in outgoing email
Then being de-prioritized since 2015.
TIL "squirting" was what Microsoft called "sharing" MP3s via their Zune MP3 player and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer tried really hard to sell the feature: "I want to squirt you a picture of my kids. You want to squirt me back a video of your vacation. That's a software experience."

New article from Smithsonian Magazine about how stupid Reflect Orbital's plans are: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/giant-mirrors-in-space-could-bring-sunlight-after-dark-one-startup-says-and-astronomers-are-concerned-180987781/
Features interviews with me and several of my excellent astronomer colleagues on the American Astronomical Society Committee for the Protection of Astronomy and the Space Environment! Looks like Reflect Orbital has followed SpaceX's lead and stopped responding to journalist inquiries.
'Do people want fire that can be fitted nasally?'
@elettrona I don't understand the question. Which hashtag and what do you mean how is it? :-D
@firesidefedi misunderstanding, I assumed I quoted the post with your/our show's links so I placed the hashtag. Damn, I made a mess
Every astronomer who complains about satellite streaks has heard the same response from techbro-types: "Why don't you just put all your telescopes in space?"
There are an incredibly large number of reasons why that is totally not going to work. But here's another from Borloff et al "Satellite megaconstellations will threaten space-based astronomy"
@sundogplanets hello greetings
Two Chicago police officers were investigated for sexual misconduct — then promoted.
It wasn’t an oversight.
Despite a decadeslong reform effort, the Chicago Police Department’s promotions system allows for disciplinary records to be ignored.

Outrageous. Cops need reform nationally. They operate as corrupt gangs.
