Palestinians being treated in one of Gaza’s few remaining hospitals are dying from their wounds because they are so malnourished, a British doctor working in the territory said.

Professor Nick Maynard, a consultant gastrointestinal surgeon, who is on his third stint volunteering in the territory since the war started, said he is seeing unprecedented levels of severe malnutrition.

With temperatures in Gaza forecast to hit a record 37°C, the Israeli army’s Arabic-language spokesperson issued an urgent warning at the beginning of the week: “Entering the sea is forbidden. Violators risk immediate danger to life.”

This, in a reality where nearly all Gazans have been displaced from their homes. Hundreds of thousands are crammed into tents or the ruins of destroyed buildings.

Two pro-Israel groups have been barred from attending events organised by Stand Up to Racism (SUTR) Scotland.

Last year, the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) and the Scottish Palestinian Society (SPS) both urged SUTR to ban Glasgow Friends of Israel (GFI) from marches as the presence of the organisation had led to a growing number of pro-Palestine organisations dropping out.

Pope Leo XIV on Thursday renewed his call for “an immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip and expressed his “profound hope” for “dialogue, reconciliation and lasting peace in the region,” following an Israeli attack on a Catholic church sheltering civilians.

The appeal came in a telegram signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin after the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza was hit during an Israeli military raid.

UK Prime Minister Starmer and German Chancellor Merz signed a friendship treaty between the United Kingdom and Germany.

The treaty between the countries includes a commitment for the two nations to assist each other in case of armed attack. This is a reaction to an increasingly aggressive Russia.

It has been nearly two months since the disastrous rollout of the US-backed aid distribution centres in Gaza, a joint venture between Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and Safe Reach Solutions (SRS), two contractors responsible for operating and militarising the centres, respectively.

I say disastrous, but these centres have been running flawlessly if the goal is to kill and maim Palestinians.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has rejected Israel’s attempt to cancel arrest warrants issued against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The decision was announced on tod by Pre-Trial Chamber I.

Israel had asked the ICC to withdraw or invalidate the warrants. It also called on the Court to suspend its investigation into crimes committed in Palestine.
