Prime Video unveils "Blade Runner 2099" full trailer at NYCC. Also: a new trailer for "Godzilla Minus Zero," the sequel to Takashi Yamazaki’s kaiju epic, "Godzilla Minus One" https://arstechnica.com/culture/2026/10/prime-video-unveils-blade-runner-2099-full-trailer-at-nycc/
@stefan Bleak.
@glecharles true but also not the whole list. The BBC and Canadian tv also. I'm Interested in broadening where I look for media.

That’s what breaking fossil fuel dependence looks like.
Governments backing more oil and gas owe people an explanation.

@JessMahler Well, that’s why I said “professed” (or “supposed”). Usually I’m pointing out a hypocrisy in a common belief about what our values are.
I know our values come from far and wide — but what I’m interested in is what the non-offensive way would be to name those.
I am not, let’s be clear, claiming our values are that.

I think @gaditb has a better answer to this than I could manage right now:

This new Firefox Nova UI is just straight ugly
Give me my normal tabs back. The new rounded corners make everything look crowded and smooshed together

@campuscodi you can switch to waterfox and make a choice of what kind of UI you prefer.
OH: “Why are we standing in an air and space museum talking about the Present Historical tense?”
“Well, we are in the present, and this is historical”
@moof what is present historical tense, as opposed to past tense
When I speak to students, I always tell them to feel free to email me with questions. Sometimes they worry that I won’t actually respond, but what they should really be worried about is me sending a new link relevant to what they asked about every three days forever.

Spooky Season announcement!
I'm auctioning some original oil painting of mine. These Monsters were painted back in 2009 and have stayed with me since, but feeling now is a good time to pass them on to some collectors. 8 in the series.
All paintings start at €300.

@desiree Drop Feeds. It's a Firefox extension, and it's great at finding feeds on sites that don't make them obvious.
Hypothetical that I'd like to explore:
If a person were to try to create some piece of fiction that took place in, say, Gotham City, or on Gallifrey, or Tatooine, they'd have their asses sued off by DC, or the BBC, or Star Wars/Disney, because those locations come from movies that are copyrighted. You can't use those settings until the copyright expires.
With the release of the recent _Backrooms_ (2016) movie, we have this interesting piece of commercial media that is based on a culturally owned story. The Backrooms as a concept is not copyrighted, because Kane Parsons (the director) didn't invent it. The concept comes from a collection of several unnamed nobodies, who made stuff, put it on the internet, and then it entered into the shared folklore.
If somebody wanted to write a companion film, say, "The Backrooms: Revisited", set within the same setting, and using many of the same tropes as were established within the Kane Parsons film -- the backrooms being a "copy of a copy", memories of the past, passing through walls to enter the backrooms, gateways appearing all across the world suddenly, etc -- what copyright rules might stop them?
Elements which existed within the folklore already surely would be seen as fair game. What about elements that are natural extensions of the existing lore? (it seems the place being a "copy of a copy" of the real world is new, but it doesn't seem a big stretch from the existing folklore)
Sure, we couldn't include Clark or his furniture shop. That's obvious. We couldn't tell their stories.
But it's very curious. To see a piece of fiction so commercially successful despite drawing so heavily from a contemporary piece of collectively constructed folklore, no?
It seems to me that this kind of work almost puts into plain view the contradiction between the creative energy of the folk tradition and the restrictive powers of our rigid copyright system.
Thoughts?
