"Ed Tech" as an industry is a racket. The application of schools was a mistake. Things started going south when schools started removing dedicated Computer classes and instead "integrated" tech skills in all curricula. Most teachers, although I love them, did not/do not have the requisite tech skills to support embedded 1:1 device usage, to say nothing of making relevant use of software. It was often rammed into lessons that didn't need or benefit from it. And the "integrationists" tasked with providing both technical expertise and curriculum guidance were set up for failure.
Things worsened with age of the iPad, followed closely by the Chromebook and Google Apps and largely, the golden era of big tech. Everyone was so ensorcelled by the idea that everyone had to code—not for its intellectual value, but because all jobs would require it (lol). And of course with Google stuff in particular, schools were getting this stuff for such a low price, it was a no-brainer. Your elementary school, powered by Google Apps.
And in the midst of this you had the "maker" craze. 3D printers and Arduinos are cool, but basically nobody had useful lesson plans for these expensive toys. But they looked great on the website for the STE(A)M program.
At some point we started turning all K-12 into a STEM job conveyor belt, and everything suffered because of it.

New request for book recommendation for the theme "Banned books".
Last year, I read the Bluest Eyes which I didn't love.
Bonus point (maybe it's a given) if it isn't written by a white man.
(I am considering Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie that I bought on @pizza_roquette (?)'s advice as I haven't read it yet and it's been banned in one school district in Florida)
Last year I read Percival Everett’s James paired with a reread of Huckleberry Finn. I’m not sure if or how widely James has been canceled, but Huckleberry Finn has, of course, and the topic comes up a lot in author interviews about James, which was an amazing read.
At the tram stop just now, right next to some of the best bicycle infrastructure you'll ever see, an American tourist came to me to ask me if the Dutch government was doing anything about "this terrible bicycle problem" we have in the Netherlands. 🙃

So far, I've had eight volunteers, with five confirmed by email.
I want to find at least 10 beta readers, and a dozen would be nice.
Sometimes I forget this isn’t an ambient part of internet lore that every single person who was online at a certain time knows.
@misty damn, I skipped that one entirely
@Migueldeicaza MiniSwift takes Swift code and processes it through standard lexer and parser stages, then generates an IR
After generating the IR, if it is running on the web, it converts it into Wasm opcodes; this is what allows the code to execute immediately as you type it on miniswift.run.
On the native side, the `ir_to_c` component processes all Swift files using a "whole-module" approach and converts them into a single C file.
@toprakdeviren thanks for the explanation!

@evacide Isn't there a law in America that companies use to prevent consumers from modifying their products? Is there any campaign/lobbying to encourage apple to do so?
Whilst I appreciate your work and EFF's; that piece of article serves no purpose apart from being a rage bait, a name and shame, or causing us paranoia to obsessively check if there is a hidden one nearby.
I hope I'm missing something here.
As a side note, the psychology to seek justice instead of crime prevention seems to have gone mad in certain countries. That's another story. @herrbischoff
@ada @herrbischoff Counterpoint: shaming people who are doing harmful things is good, actually.
Update. I just updated the page on the end of Open Access Tracking Project with some final data on its work.
https://cyber.harvard.edu/hoap/The_End_of_the_Open_Access_Tracking_Project
* Over the life of the project, we had 121 active taggers.
* We tagged 111,411 items, which comes to 17.4 per day for 17+ years.
* Of those items, 93,909 were new (within the last six months) at the time of tagging, and 17,232 were older items tagged retroactively.
* To the best of my knowledge, we tagged every day, including weekends and holidays, with the sole exception of days when TagTeam was down for maintenance.
* We had 343 project-approved tags and more than 10,000 attested tags.
Well well well, if it isn't the consequences to my own actions 😬

Bluetooth headset for computer. PS4 controller plugged in via USB port, using a generic cable.
If I am playing a game, headset stays on and stays with game.
If I have secondary audio running, like a podcast, if I don't put anything else on once the podcast finishes, my headset will go into sleep mode after a few minutes
(So not reading the game as an audio source to stay on for even though the headset is still playing the game audio until it goes to sleep.)
If I turn the headset back on, it does not automatically start playing the game audio again. It will still play other audio if I start it .
Making the game background, then unplugging and replugging in the controller, will make the game audio come into the headset again.
Messing with the controller while the game is the active window will not link the headset to the game.
Is very bizarre
