I decided to take advantage of yesterday's rainy/cooler weather and visited #Shenandoah National Park. I hiked the Rose River Falls loop and the Bearfence Scramble. The weather was perfect – very foggy and slightly drizzly. And the waterfalls were gushing from the recent rainfall!

Rose River Falls is one of my favorites in the park. It’s not too easy or too hard, and it follows the river most of the time so you can constantly hear the gorgeous rushing water. Plus it always has the coolest mushrooms. It’s also a sentimental hike for me, as its the one I did the day my grandmother passed away. I’ve hiked it countless times, and it never gets old.

Bearfence is a short trail, only a mile long, but it has a ton of super fun rock scramble. As adults we don’t get to climb nearly enough, and you forget how fun it can be! The summit has a beautiful 360 degree mountain view, though it was completely obfuscated by the fog yesterday. I like tacking this one on to my day when I do shorter hikes in the park, to add a little more mileage and some fun.

A peaceful shot taken of the Rose River cascading down a hill. The river is filled with rocks, and the water is pooling in some areas before traveling further down. Lush greenery and trees surround the river, and at the bottom of the picture there is a wild hydrangea with small white flower bunches. This is the first view of the river I saw when the trail ran into it, and I had to stop and admire the view for a few minutes!

The view from The Point overlook, which has a rock you can walk to for views of the surrounding mountains. In this shot the blue mountains (they're called the Blue Ridge for a reason!) are partially obscured by light fog. The sky is completely cloudy. In the foreground there are the tops of tall trees that grow below the lookout point. I stopped at this spot between my two hikes, and it was a lovely place for a snack!

A shot taken at the peak of Bearfence mountain on a foggy day. While normally this spot has 360 degree views, the views are obscured by dense fog. There is a jagged rock with a light blue blaze painted on it, showing the direction the rock scramble takes. Behind it are trees in a foggy haze, dissapearing into the mist the further out it goes.

A shot taken of a waterfall, specifically Rose River Falls in Shenandoah National Park. The waterfall is beautiful and very full from recent rainfall. It is falling into a pool at the bottom which makes a good swimming hole. The falls is surrounded by rocks covered in lichens, with small plants growing out of cracks. Normally there are lots of people sitting by this falls, but I luckily had it to myself this time!

#Fog can roll in suddenly, at any time of day. It's a good idea to consult the weather before #boating.

Look at that #ocean. Smooth as glass, an eerie quiet, between the islands .

We've done the "island hop" before, staying in sight of shore, to find the mainland.

Biking home I also realised that I could photograph the swirling droplets of fog in the beam of my bike light.

Swirly!!

(Commuter biking with a camera is not the fastest mode of transport. 😄)

Here's my other movie of fog in motion through the beam of my bike light. The motion is from the fog droplets in the breeze.

You've seen the stills and now here are the motion pictures. Fog in motion! Swirly swirl swirl.

I just uploaded to #Flickr a couple of macro movies I made looking at the droplets of fog swirling across the beam of my bike light. Here's one of them.

I hadn't realised until this week that fog was so mesmerising.

Those of you who wear glasses and ride a bike will know about riding at night in fog or drizzle. The night lights do strange things through droplets that settle on glasses.

On my bike commute home tonight in fog, aside from regularly wiping my glasses, I also wondered whether you can get the same effect with a camera.

And, yes, you can! I had lots of fun on my ride home exploring that. Here are some of my favourites.
