#QuestionOfTheDay what's something (a character, a theme, a plot point, a scene, etc) in a work that you enjoy which you find people (audiences/fans/critics, etc) regularly misunderstand or miss the entire point of and it bugs you? This can even include people misunderstanding authorial intent or the message of the work, etc

use spoiler warnings as needed

@ami_angelwings Honestly every theme in Nier Automata seems to go glossed over in favor of the fact that it's a platinum game with a sexy main character, which I'm generally pretty saddened by. It's a really thematically rich game with a lot to say about the purposelessness of conflict and perpetuating violence by being born into a system built upon it

but it's okay it's the sexy robot lady game! did you know her ass has more polygons than the entirety of ocarina of time? a tweet said so!

@pixel @ami_angelwings @xgranade there's one theme which this doesn't destroy at least, which is that Yoko Taro REALLY loves two things:

1) flowers
2) girls

anyway mine would be that people think Fahrenheit 451 is about government censorship for SOME GODDAMNED REASON rather than the descent of a society into casual cruelty and disinterest, of which the Firemen are a natural consequence.

There's an ENTIRE MONOLOGUE about this that spells it out explicitly, for fuck's sake, and yet…

@yon @SnoopJ @pixel @ami_angelwings @xgranade JFC the late 90s Hallmark TV movie based on it. It was changed so that Jones was just a drunken, abusive outlier and the neighboring farmers sat around in the pub tsk-tsking about how cruel he was to his livestock. And at the end, after the farm collapsed under pig rule, the owner shows up -- a telegenic, Kennedyesque young guy in a convertible playing Fats Domino, with his cute young family -- and sets things to right under human management. I was in an absolute rage by the end of it.

@KevinCarson1 @SnoopJ @pixel @ami_angelwings @xgranade I have a hard time thinking any of these books will be faithfully adapted to TV/Movies. There’s a long list of awful cases where books have been butchered.

Ironically Archer (the main character from the TV show of the same name) describes Animal Farm quite well.
