How does a click turn into a digital stalker?

It's the work of the Adtech industry that feasts on our cookies to sell ads.

This system automatically shares our data profiles with companies thousands of times a second, across millions of sites.

How do advertisers track you online?

You search for boots and click on a pair you like — just once — then decide they are not what you want.

How does it work?

Our cookie crumbs left across the Internet form predictive profiles.

These are shared and sold in a real-time bidding system that runs automatically when you visit a website.

The ad space is auctioned based on the interests gleaned by tracking you online. Highest bidder wins.

What about cookie consent banners?

Under UK law, you need to consent to companies tracking you. But the data regulator has been too lenient in how this is done.

That means we get hit with confusing or manipulative cookie banners.

So most people end up being tracked whether they want to be or not.

5 Reasons You Need an Ad-Blocker

Some people claim to really appreciate targeted advertising. They say that they love hearing about new products, services, or media they might be interested. Others, like myself, hate advertising of any kind with an unhinged level of vitriol that I should probably talk about in therapy. Regardless of where you

Japanese ads can feel noisy, confusing or just plain weird — but none of it is accidental. Copywriters bend grammar, skip verbs and use puns to make you want to spend your cash. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2026/02/02/language/commercial-advertising-japanese-phrases/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #language #nihongo #vocabulary #grammar #advertising #jlptn2

Looking at billboards and bus stops it feels like offline ads are out of fashion. I see ad posters for events hat happened months ago, public ads for museums and messages from the public transport organisations themselves.

Is it just me (my city) or do others notice that too?

Google Settlement May Bring New Privacy Controls for Real-Time Bidding

EFF has long warned about the dangers of the “real-time bidding” (RTB) system powering nearly every ad you see online. A proposed class-action settlement with Google over their RTB system is a step in the right direction towards giving people more control over their data. Truly curbing the harms of RTB, however, will require stronger legislative protections.
