Some other simple things

8. Disable google advertising ID in phone settings

9. Install F-Droid where you can discover many FLOSS apps deliberately not published on google play

10. Switch from a fingerprint to a pin (added bonus that police in several countries can legally force your thumb onto your phone but cant legally force you to give up a pin)

11. Switch from google notification servers to something else like microg and/or set notifications to not display message content or at least not display message content when the phone is locked (Im pretty sure all that can be done from notification settings)

12. Switch from googles keyboard app to an open source alternative from f-droid (google has been fined millions before for illegally and secretly tracking geolocation it wouldnt surprise me if they do the same with keystrokes, and also mic and camera)

13. There's a bunch of other phone-home features spread across the settings but mostly under privacy category and accessibility category that you might want to turn off if you have no use for

The new Mozilla CEO has openly talked about a possibility of “blocking ad blockers” to get more money from the advertising industry (and paid subscriptions to Firefox…). That sounds like a disaster to even consider it publicly, as saying it aloud will increasingly crush people’s trust in Mozilla’s future.

I'm less concerned about an ad clearly appearing before the output text, than I am about the possibility of distorting info.

Info about sponsors/competitors could be subtly changed in the generated media, influencing the world view of people at scale towards commercial interests.

Essentially this would change advertising from "pay for a banner" into "pay for bias" disseminated en mass.

What happens if most entertainment becomes AI generated with subtle, individualized biases designed to influence each person, step by step, show by show, game by game?

Think The Matrix, but we each get our own, designed just to influence us.

At the time, if memory serves correctly, Windows XP/2003 were the current OSes then. It wasn't like they were stable or secure. MS poured millions into those ads. 😂

Today in Labor History November 22, 1891: Dr. Edward L. Bernays was born in Vienna, Austria. Bernays, a nephew of Freud, is considered by many to be father of public relations. He is credited with getting millions of women to start smoking with his “Torches of Freedom” cigarette ad campaign that equated smoking with feminism, and with women’s liberation and independence. He also worked to legitimize the CIA/United Fruit overthrow of the democratically-elected Arbenz government in Guatemalan, becoming the primary supplier of information for the international newswires, like Associated Press, United Press International, and the International News Service. He described the masses as irrational and subject to herd instinct and wrote books on how to harness this to maximize profits. In the 1930s, his critics compared him to Goebbels and Hitler, and Goebbels did, indeed, read and utilize Bernays’s books to inform his propaganda campaigns. Bernays was even offered a job by the Nazis, which he reportedly turned down.
