I’m listening to the Smartless podcast and they have a bunch of ads and we all know how I feel about ads on podcasts.

The midroll ones were actually really good. They were host read ads and the hosts are actors so their deliveries were great.

Again, I’m not against Advertising in podcasts. I’m against front loading 3 ads on the show before you even get to the intro.

I listen to a lot of podcasts. And some have ads. The ones that do it right, IMHO, are those who intro the show first, maybe have a clip or two about what’s coming up on the show, then segue into an ad spot in a creative way.

What isn’t a good idea is having more than 1 had at the start before the intro. I get having one pre-roll then getting into the content, but 3 or 4 is nuts. I’d like to see the drop off of listeners when there are so many pre-rolls before the show even starts.

Here’s my rule: 1 preroll, 1 or 2 midrolls (depending on length of the show), and a post-roll for network news or announcements.

Here's something about AntennaPod that I've been wondering for a while. Sometimes I'm listening to podcasts from another country, but they have ads in a kiwi accent, about NZ businesses. How does this happen?

Is AntennaPod inserting these ads on-the-fly?

Are they being inserted just before it downloads?

Do the publishers of these podcasts have CDNs in different countries, each with local ads in their versions of podcasts? If so, how do they know which country I'm in?
