President Donald Trump's administration is seeking to assert its control over Venezuelan oil, seizing two sanctioned tankers transporting petroleum and announcing plans to relax some sanctions so the U.S. can oversee the sale of Venezuela’s petroleum worldwide.

The ship was sanctioned by the #US in 2024 for allegedly smuggling cargo for a company linked to Lebanese militant group #Hezbollah. The US #CoastGuard attempted to board it in the #Caribbean in December as it headed for #Venezuela, which the #Trump admin has placed under naval blockade [but they continue to claim it’s not a #war]. The ship refused boarding & headed across the #Atlantic.

#Russia hasn’t commented on the apparent #US operation against the Russian-flagged #OilTanker. In a statement issued on Tuesday to the state news agency #Tass, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the vessel was operating in full compliance with international #MaritimeLaw, & said it was receiving increased attention from the US & #NATO “disproportionate to its peaceful status.”

#RT, the #Russia state-owned broadcaster, published images of a helicopter approaching the Russian-flagged #OilTanker being pursued by the #USCG & said it appeared US forces were attempting to board.

#China on Wednesday said that US claims on Venezuela’s #oil were “a classic act of bullying.” Mao Ning, a spox for China’s foreign ministry, said #Venezuela has “full & permanent #sovereignty over its #NaturalResources & all #economic activities.”
