Two things can be true at the same time:
- Intellectual property is a regime of state-enforced monopolies that exists to extract value from people using otherwise non-rivalrous ideas, to the advantage primarily of the already-rich and to the detriment of a world deprived of the free expression of those ideas, and
- Under a system in which people depend on returns to their intellectual labor to survive in capitalist markets, stealing the product of that labor with impunity does real harm to those workers.
I calculated how different battery sizes would influence our energy balance. Based on data from 2025. Charging limits and battery losses not taken into account.

The optimal battery size based on that data would have been 7 kWh (256 cycles) to 10 kWh (194 cycles).
Over a lifespan of 10 years, a 7 kWh battery would save 3600 € (1794 kWh times 10 years times 0,2 € (current energy price 0,26 € - 0,6 € lost feed in earning)).
From a financial perspective, a battery still doesn't make sense to me in our situation. Maybe if the inverter needs replacing or if the heat pump changes our usage profile enough.

If Raspberry Pi really did do this to protect their users as they claim, they will adopt this method (just saying it's non-original memory instead of refusing to boot). If they don't implement it, that's proof that it's about protecting their profits, not their users.
