i read an article about syntax highlighting that said "don't use bold or italics because they're redundant with color highlighting." but consider,

a screenshot of THINK Pascal running on a black-and-white Macintosh desktop. the source code is presented in a variable-width font, with Pascal keywords highlighted in bold

Visual Basic 6 also would let you use bold as a syntax highlighting element, iirc. I propose that it's less redundant when the font is (or at least can be) proportional, which many "modern" code-editors apparently do not support.
