I wonder if there are hidden upper limits in this kind of pricing since people don't just look at the price of one item, but the total cost of, for example, "buying food" if the food bill becomes too high people change their choices. For example they might not go to as "nice" of a store next time.
This is kind of the problem "Uber Eats" et al have. Their prices are so high people decide they can't afford delivery at all.
Thought I agree pricing laws make sense.
Yeah, all these systems advertise "profit maximization" and I'm sure they estimate how much they can increase prices without losing too many customers. The estimate from that Consumer Reports study was that it would cost an average family of four $1200 / year.
In the local (for you) angle ... New York City passed the "Algorithmic Pricing Disclosure Act" last year, which mandates disclosure of when prices are set by algorithms, and New York State passed the "One Fair Price Act" earlier this summer.
