I managed to get the course page up and running for the *other* course (that's not online and doesn't have videos that got sucked in to Zoom's genAI system). Much easier, but I couldn't find my notebook with all my lectures in it from 3 years ago, last time I taught this class. So... if it's not in my campus office, I'm going to be extremely sad and have a LOT of work to do. If it's there, I'm all good to go for the semester!
Today is the gubernatorial election in Kagawa. Four candidates, four "independents." The current governor is backed by... every party from the LDP to the CDP (and everyone in between). He'll probably be reelected with 75% of the vote (and a participation of 20% like last time). One is backed by the CPJ (he's been a candidate for another election before).
Two are truly (?) independent. Now, the trick is to figure out what are they ideologies. One has a strange background. ⤵️
@David
The independent candidates here tend to be "wear protective equipment before opening website" level off-the-wall. When the Kofuku no kagaku candidate is on the sane end the field isn't great.
Six months into a conflict that U.S. President Donald Trump predicted would last "four to five weeks," Republican strategists are increasingly worried about the party's prospects in November's midterm elections. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/08/30/world/politics/republicans-iran-war-midterm-threat/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #worldnews #politics #us #iran #middleeast #usmilitary #donaldtrump #republicans #democrats #congress
Server costs for #Dillo have now increased twofold due to "high demand on computing parts and storage".
We still have plenty of runway, but we may need to evaluate hosting on our own hardware, as we barely need more than a old Raspberry Pi for all the infrastructure (on purpose).
The impact of datacenters is ultimately paid by all of us.

Congratulations to the Curiosity rover -- a.k.a. MSL, or Mars Science Laboratory -- which begins sol 5000 on Mars approximately when this posts. The lack of celebration, or even appropriate acknowledgement, from NASA is practically criminal, but it takes nothing away from the talent and dedication of my good friends who have brought us to this kilometerstone and beyond. Ad astra, y'all. Keep on rovin'. #space

(now, is it a little gauche? Yes, it's a little gauche. But i will forgive Americans for not really giving a shit about appearances and politeness anymore given idiot Hitler and his entire cult are ruining their lives)
This is a response to a "don't cheer on the Gestapo just because they got someone you don't like" post - which I mean is good advice, but doesn't apply here because this isn't the Gestapo doing Gestapo things. Loomer called in the hit.
New: Americans' feelings toward Flock & license-plate readers have completely flipped since last year.
More Americans now oppose police use than support it, saying the cameras don't make them feel safer and that they don't want any near their homes.
