In 2024, I put together a pack of SVG wallpapers based on some iconic vintage computer front panels, because the industrial design was (imo) beautiful.
At the time, I shared them to mastodon, but that was two instances ago, and they were only created as 1920x1080 images.
So today, I've put them on my website, along with the #inkscape SVGs used to create them.
It was a wonderful, quiet evening in the Vejle River Valley tonight, only occasionally interrupted by a distant moo from the Belted Galloway cattle.
Wish I had brought a tent to spend the night among the bats, the otters, and the others.

@randahl the first time I saw this breed of cattle I was visiting the Netherlands. “They’re Oreo cows!” I shouted smilingly, referencing the chocolate sandwich cookies filled with vanilla creme. 🐄
Incidentally, it was during this same trip my friend revealed she had been taught as a young child chocolate milk came from brown cows — a story she believed into high school. 🍫🥛

When playing chess computers are capable of evaluating far more different plays than us humans, but they still can't evaluate anywhere near enough to determine the absolute best play.
That said: The faster we can have them evaluate each individual play the more of them they can consider.
But more importantly we need to find ways for them to discard plays out-of-hand.
One core trick here is alpha-beta pruning...

Canadians are having to deal with more and more enshittification of the US-based tech they are forced to use because of these laws that protect US tech oligarchs' power, and prevent anyone from making better, non-US-made, tech.

Some things about eink screens which make them interesting to design for:
They can hold hold a static screen without using any power & are comfortable to read, but on the flipside they are slow-ish to update (with an inverted flash to avoid burn-in) & they have a highly limited colour palette.
The colour palette used to be pure black & white, but today you also get red & yellow as well.
It is possible for custom firmware to run eink at 60fps, but then you loose the power-savings.

Hybrid groups (i.e. @cwtch peer to peer groups where one peer acts as a semi-trusted "host" permitting more flexibility/functionality/efficiency than the existing untrusted infrastructure groups ) has been one of those long running projects for us.
We finally had the ability to focus on it this summer, and I am really excited by what are have put together.
