Beavers are really important.

After the huge wildfires in Oregon in 2022, a biologist went out to survey the damage. Not only were the forests blackened, thriving trout populations in the streams were gone, choked to death by ash. “I was in total shock. It just looked like devastation.”

Then he stumbled upon something even more surprising: roughly five acres of pristine greenery in an otherwise burned-out area! At the center were eight active beaver dams.

But this was more than a refuge from the fire. While fish had disappeared upstream of these dams, the downstream water was crystal clear — and trout were thriving as though the fire had never happened! The beaver dams were acting as a water treatment plant.

Hier entwickelt sich eine hochinteressante Diskussion, die ich allen empfehlen kann, die sich dafür interessieren, wie der Politikbetrieb funktioniert.

Da ich mir aber schwer tue, den Punkt zu finden, wo ich einhaken möchte, will ich hier meine eigenen Gedanken aufschreiben.

Die diskutierten Artefakte im Politikbetrieb sind für mich letztendlich Symptome. Schonmal vorweg: Ich habe kein Lösung für das eigentliche Problem.

Ich sehe hier einen Konflikt zwischen Macht- und Lösungsorientierung. Ein System, das auf Kooperation ausgelegt ist, öffnet immer Möglichkeiten für machtorientierte Menschen, das System zu manipulieren / auszunutzen.
Und wenn wir einen sozialen, demokratischen Rechtsstaat wollen, brauchen wir ein kooperatives System.

If AI/LLMs are cut off from stolen human labour, their outputs turn to meaningless gibberish due to model collapse.

If AI/LLM owners are forced to pay for human labour instead of stealing it, they go bankrupt.

If AI/LLM data centres are forced to stay within energy consumption levels compatible with fighting climate change, they have to close down the overwhelming majority of their capacity.

AI/LLMs are just not sustainable, they can only function through labour theft and burning the planet. They're not so much new technology as a new type of ponzi scheme.

German taxpayers are handing BMW €273m to once again attempt to push hydrogen-powered cars, when battery prices have once again dropped >50% in the past ~18 month and CATL is on its 5th-gen LFP battery.

CATL, BYD et al must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Sigh.
