“The public will be astonished to learn that in the British justice system a protester can now be convicted of criminal damage for disrupting an arms factory and then be sentenced as ‘terrorists’ without having been convicted of terror charges and with this having been kept secret from the jury.”
Proton Pass passed an app audit.
Say that 10 times very quickly.
I was only made aware of this (frankly awesome) case of LLM poisoning today: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-01100-y. A researcher made up a disease and published two evidently fake preprints about it (including sentences such as “this entire paper is made up” and “Fifty made-up individuals aged between 20 and 50 years were recruited for the exposure group”), which were almost immediately picked up by LLMs and documented in their output. Worse, actual – supposedly serious – medical papers also started citing the preprints, demonstrating that academics relying on LLMs to do their work is a genuine problem! Not that I had my doubts but, if anyone did, this seems like the perfect demonstration of the problem. Article immediately added to the syllabus of the class I am co-teaching with Iris Ferrazzo on LLMs for Romance Studies/Humanities!

I realised today that although familiar with the phrase being “hoisted by my own petard” I didn’t know what a petard is.
The ‘hoisted’ bit made me assume it was a kind of rope but now, with decades of wrongness under me, I am exploded by learning that a petard is a bomb.
To thine own self be true
I had originally imagined petard as being someone like a lance or a pike, and that's still in my mind even after learning what a petard is. I always think of someone hung on top of a flagpole by their underwear, not someone blown into the air.
@dysfun “for entertainment purposes only”
@rysiek The tool vs. replacement debate depends entirely on who holds the tool and why. In some fields AI is genuinely assistive. In others it's clearly a cost-cutting excuse. The difference is intent. 🤔
@tanyelcakmak I would wager a bet that in the fields where it is genuinely assistive it is mostly referred to by other, more specific terms than "AI".
And in the case of this blogpost and all the "AI layoffs", it is not even directly a cost cutting tool, but as I noted earlier in the thread, a tool to change power dynamics in the workplace and a tool to cover for previous bad decisions of the management (for example, over-hiring during COVID, so laying folks off now).
> Women leaving the beach, going into a shop, or simply standing outside are now being approached by men usually wearing Meta's Ray-Bans, the company's "smart" or "AI" glasses, often in order to film the women's responses to casual questions or pick-up lines without their knowledge or consent.
Perhaps it is time to simply ban them from public.
Whether I'm talking about spy glasses or men, you decide...
@neil
Ban Meta. Close it down. Yeah I'm idealistic...
This post almost needs a CW.
I got as far as Core Beliefs and already started wincing. Truly sad to see such a great project become so very lost.
TL;DR upper management at GitLab has joined the machine cult and is taking the project with them.
"Software will be built by machines, directed by people. AI is the substrate on which future software gets built."
Wrong way, turn back.
Hi @JulianOliver,
frankly I am not at all surprised. When github.com got bought, I looked around where to go in the longer run. gitlab.com wasn't a safe bet already back then - the smell of #enterprise/#corporate #VC #money was strong.
I took the indie & mirror route and never regret it: https://blog.mro.name/2024/10/scaling-infrastructure/#:~:text=gitlab%2Ecom

I just think that to some extent one will not be able to avoid some Server/Cient architecture unless being unavailable /temporary and non-persistent / permanent [like #Tox or #WebRTC-based applications] is an explicitly desired feature.
Take your time and don't be afraid if your first attempts are very minimalist and don't do all the things you want in Version 0.0.1, 0.1 or even 1.0 ...
Having fun building should be important to you...
> xkcd 927 is a thought-terminating cliché that gets overly cited
Yes, I agree it is cited too often. I was hesitant to mention it for that reason, esp. since you clearly gave this a lot of thought, and I am just passing by giving feedback. The format appears to be complementary but also quite overlapping. Creating a new spec - depending on your expectations wrt adoption - takes a ton of effort to bring to any widespread use. But perhaps that is not needed.
Wrt AP I am thinking myself about a Protosocial protocol extension that forms an 'overlay network' of sorts, to help bring more rigour to various network communication patterns.

It is on the slow burner, as I can't afford to spend time on it atm.

"These countries like Vietnam, North Korea, China ... former Stalinist, or former Maoist, they're one party, authoritarian, *states-capitalist* systems."
#PaulBuchanan, political scientist, former Pentagon Analyst, 2026
It's so vindicating to hear someone from Buchanan's background say this. Like most anarchists in Aotearoa, I've been saying this since the 1990s, if not longer.

"'Communism' is a [boogieman or whipping boy] for the right-wing, which yells 'commie' every time it sees something that talks about egalitarianism or [re]distribution."
#PaulBuchanan, political scientist, former Pentagon Analyst, 2026
Exactly. Countries ruled by authoritarian state-capitalist systems have been used for decades to scare the public away from the ideas that democratic socialists/ communists actually advocate for.

@slims are we talking Spanish, corn, or flour?
@jamesrg ideally all three but for the most part flour, at some point i’d love to eat corn tortillas on a regular basis
if this is is you, what’s your going rate to come here and show me how it’s done?
