It's so vindicating to hear someone from Buchanan's background say this. Like most anarchists in Aotearoa, I've been saying this since the 1990s, if not longer.

Exactly. Countries ruled by authoritarian state-capitalist systems have been used for decades to scare the public away from the ideas that democratic socialists/ communists actually advocate for.

It's precisely because of these decades of well-funded propaganda that we have new crops of tankies among the generations born since the end of the Cold War. The prevailing wisdom among the political class, and news media, is that multi-party authoritarian capitalism has only one viable opposition; one-party authoritarian capitalism, which is called 'communism'. So people who find the system they grew up under intolerable do the logical thing, and champion that opposition.
