I have a lot of children’s books and clothes (used but in excellent condition) that I was planning to donate to a charity shop. Before I do, I wondered if there’s anywhere locally (I'm in Perthshire) that would pass items directly to families who might need them for free - community groups, mutual aid networks, schools, or similar?

I’d much rather they went straight to someone who could use them.

I think I just do not believe that computation is the critical resource gating the social-political changes that will improve human life in the next century. I believe the critical resources are real-world (non-automateable) human labor, human coordination, human care. I believe computation can help support those but any economic model where "compute is the new oil" is disastrously off the mark and will accelerate the climate collapse we need the labor and coordination and care to mitigate.

This article by @parisba is why #CommunityHosting and #SelfHosting need to be normalised. They are the only way we can stop scenarios like this happening:

I have seen some people making nice 8-bit fonts. Not necessarily retro-looking fonts, but fonts that would look nice on an Apple II or a C64. Unfortunately, I did not save those posts when I saw them.

@jimcullen @notjustbikes @BrentToderian @brisbane Sorry, but Stage 5 is where the hard work begins: 5a: Do the right thing, but very poorly, e.g. build segregated cycle lanes but they end whenever an intersection would have required redesigning. 5b: Do the right thing, but incompletely, e.g. only planning for local bike traffic, not fast commuting (because cyclists only ever pootle around at 3 mph, stopping for coffee or smelling the wayside flowers every half mile). 5c: Do the right things for cyclists but at the detriment of pedestrians and public transport, like 'floating' bus stops. 5d: Putting bollards everywhere because SUVs and dented Amazon vans mount every curb and park everywhere.
