Good morning from #Iceland

I've been mulling the question: what is intelligence?

Usually, I see a list of specific competency types: logic and math, spatial reasoning, identifying patterns, short-term recall, and language and vocabulary. But that doesn't work: you wouldn't answer: what is a car? by saying: it starts it stops, it turns, it consumes gas, etc.

And nobody is satisfied by Turing test type answers. So to me the question remains open. What is it, exactly?

According to RideWithGPS I climbed 614 meters yesterday. According to Strava it was more that a kilometer. I can't sustain this, so I'm going to bus to Egilsstadir (which will take two days) and rest and maybe get dental care. I wish I were 40 years younger, a hale 26 year old. The spaces between the towns are magical, the views stunning. I'm so glad I came, despite how hard it has been. #bikepacking#Iceland

I'm taking a rest day today in Dj煤pivogur. It's Commerce Day, so things are closed. Though there's a cruise ship in port, so who knows. I don't mind admitting that #bikepacking#Iceland is harder than I even thought it would be. The hills, wind, weather, distances, lack of shelter for a break - these all combined. And I need to plan better - I can't just go on a noodle breakfast and dry bread (on which I broke a tooth,). I need proper energy - and a dentist. 71 km, 622 m climbed.

If you're wondering what those issues are, well:
- going in and out of Reykjavik a couple of times, plus a necessary day after each to rest my knee, has wrecked my schedule.
- the stretch between Vik and Hofn is not ideal for cyclists, with distances between campsites well in excess of a single day's ride
- unrelenting heavy rain in the south for at least the next ten days

Taking the bus from Vik to Hofn addresses all three issues. #Iceland #bikeparking

Selfoss #Iceland a nice town with too much traffic. I'm taking a real rest day today rather than cycle against the wind in the rain. My, um, experience is unique even for bikepackers. Leave aside my considerable weight and age. I injured my knee a few weeks ago in Toronto and so, even now, I can barely walk. Hurts quite a bit. But I can cycle just fine. I have a knee brace and it sometimes helps. So I can get close to attractions, but can't see them unless I can bike to them.

Volcanic plume. Day 6 in #Iceland. Took the bus to Reykjavik and then Keflavik to see if I could recover something I had left behind. I could not. But my day - mostly spent on buses - was not wasted. First, Iceland has great buses. Second, I am so glad I followed the route I did instead of the massive climb the direct route would have entailed. Third, great scenery in clearing skies. And of course this photo of the volcanic plume rising high and out to sea

I mistakenly said that the last puffin photo I posted was taken in May 2019 when it was in fact taken in June 2019. It matters to nobody but me but the mistake irked me. My social anxiety stopped me from editing the post because I didn't want to spam the notification of hundreds of people. 馃槀

This photo was taken on the same visit to L谩trabjarg. Please consider this an erratum of some sort.
