@markus Thank you. This is an incredibly helpful insight. Can I ask: what kinds of business were your customers in, and what did they do to "optimise for those channels"?
We don't rely on AI traffic now (hence the blocking) but I'm looking forward at a changing landscape, and wondering how I can improve the usefulness of the software for everyone.
@benpate They develop licensed javascript packages that they market and sell themselves.
We have not been able to say 100% "this works" yet, but we see some positive effect of better and more structured metadata on all HTML pages. Following schema.org structures.
We're also trying to track known AI crawlers to see how they behave on the sites and what they ask for, hoping to use it to better serve what they are after.
Example: totally dominated by white men. Start cutting out the white men until there's fair representation. DHH is one who needs to be kicked out, sure. What about the thousands of other white dudes who need to sit the fuck down?
This is especially true of leadership roles. In general, software engineers don't make great leaders. This is doubly true for white male software engineers. Better representation in leadership roles would make overrepresentation of white men in developer roles less of an issue.

Mooi zo. En terecht. Trans vrouwen zijn vrouwen. Goed dat ze een schadevergoeding krijgt en respect dat ze deze zaak heeft doorgezet.
There's no difference between a combustion engine car hitting you and an EV hitting you: they can both kill a human even at low speed.
Hrm. Something fails, but debugging init is hard.
It's probably printed on the console, but the stupid kernel debugger displays a backtrace and hides it.
AI gives you infinite content made just for you. That's exactly the wrong problem to solve.
Culture scales through shared experience, not customization. A perfect private AI film gives you nothing to hand anyone else. "I see dead people" worked because everyone was in the room.
Humans don't want more content. We want common ground.

@Daojoan there's this idea that those who control computational power/data centers will basically enslave people thorough hyper-personalized AI-generated content (https://www.amazon.com/Life-3-0-Being-Artificial-Intelligence/dp/1101970316 explores it quite a bit). While I really want people to want common ground, I sadly mostly see hunger for hyper-personalized slop... What would it take to wake them up?

@davidgerard I love the stuff about the timing, how the WSJ ran the story before Coxon got his first tweet up and then it was immediately retweeted by a bunch of other Anthropic employees. Makes it super-obvious that this is a planned marketing campaign, so thank you for getting that information out there so clearly!

@edudiaz les butxaques ben plenes i les menjadores a ple rendiment.
@urlyman I see that, too. I think there’s a bit of a gold rush effect going on now that it’s easy to generate a new plugin in a day.
Then there are plugins that try to work with LLMs and I think that even if you can get a setup that works right now, it’s likely going to change and uproot a lot of that quickly, too.
The move to Craft 6 will be an interesting litmus test on who actually cares about building for the community.
If this isn’t the case, then I’m happy to be wrong, but right now I feel what you’re feeling about a lot of tech.
@wbrowar thanks Will.
I’m not walking away from Craft for the foreseeable. But I am looking to fundamentally change my relationship to work and tech generally. Remains to be seen if I can follow through
I am still struggling with how to port German #folklore and folk tales into a good #ttrpg setting. Mechanical translation of the fantastic elements would be the easy part - the more difficult part would be to build a framework for long-running campaigns, since almost all folk tales are basically "one-shot" stories that don't care about further adventures of the protagonists.
Maybe it would be a good idea to develop a "#playtest version" of such a setting, and then develop it further based on player feedback. Such a "playtest version" would have to include:
- Description of supernatural elements in the setting, including creatures and their mechanical design (I am currently inclined towards #BRP as the rules)
- A guide to German culture in a specific time period (I'm currently inclined towards the year 1649)
- Player character options, including supernatural powers
- A "regional gazeteer" for a specific region that is particularly rich in adventuring potential, and which uses both real world history and local legends (any suggestions for which region?)
Once people have actually played with such a setting and came up with their own campaigns, then I could refine it further.
Your thoughts?
@juergen_hubert Since I don't know much about #BRP myself, other than its stellar reputation, I would of course be amiss not throwing #GURPS into the ring, not only because it's my favorite system but because of it's flexibility, it would be perfect for such a setting. This milieu also makes me think of the #XFiles TV show, not only because I'm currently 1/2 way thru a re-watch, but also because of it's combination of one-shot, episodic stories intermixed with an over-arching story-line.

RE: https://ohai.social/@sushee/117252843262383050
One of the main reasons LLMs are popular for programming is that programming languages suck.
I’m hoping that better languages will emerge that are more geared at what humans actually want to do (e.g. there’s no reason simple scripts need 100-line boilerplates).
And then you’ll get the speed of implementation without the wastefulness and roulette-playing of an LLM.
@thomasfuchs @sushee That’s why tools like Visual Basic, AppleScript and Hypercard (and Lisp/Smalltalk) were so great… but they’re also a bajillionty years old and that concept hasn’t evolved. Those were the single-celled organisms in comparison to what we *should* have today.
