I agree, don't go to the US, but for those that must, consider entering through a smaller, regional 'port'. For example, Aer Lingus (from Ireland) has flights into Hartford CT. All US immigration and customs is done in Dublin (preclearance), not on the ground in the US. If you were to encounter any issues, likely better for it to happen there, in the EU, than in the US (you would be denied the right to board rather than detained, and 'returned' to Ireland).
