A completely frozen Lochan na h-Achlaise, with the Black Mount in the background, from this afternoon.

Fun fact. I’ve been learning Scottish Gaelic for two years now and had to double check when I heard this name, but yes, Lochan na h-Achlaise does indeed translate to Loch of the Armpit.

@kristiedegaris Beautiful! In German, the armpit is called Achsel (or Achselhöhle). I see a resemblance. Or is it coincidence?

@dalstroka @kristiedegaris frozen maybe, but is it named after an armpit?

@dalstroka That does look pretty darn frozen. Hard to compete. You win this time Norway.

@kristiedegaris Amazing. Normally there's a LOT (50-150cm) snow on it.....but for once it froze before the snow came. We call it "stålis"...."steel ice".

Except you said lochan which is significantly smaller than a lake 😛
