A completely frozen Lochan na h-Achlaise, with the Black Mount in the background, from this afternoon.

Fun fact. I’ve been learning Scottish Gaelic for two years now and had to double check when I heard this name, but yes, Lochan na h-Achlaise does indeed translate to Loch of the Armpit.

My partner has been learning to do traditional Lakota beadwork and the beads and needles are a very fun challenge to photograph.

The focal plane at 1:1 40mm at f/2.8 is far too narrow, and I haven't set up focus stacking software, so these are shot at f/11 and f/6 respectively, which in turn means using a tripod and a very bright light.

Palomar Mountain is covered in oak trees - both true oaks and live oaks, which are evergreen. When I visited, the deciduous trees were turning some very lovely colors.
