🚨 ANOTHER POWERFUL X-FLARE!

Sunspot 4274 just fired off yet another monster—an X4-class solar flare early this morning. This blast wasn’t aimed squarely at Earth, but it did launch a fast CME that’s expected to give our magnetic field a glancing smack on Nov. 16–17.

A shortwave radio blackout hit the Indian Ocean during the eruption, and NASA models suggest we could see G1–G2 geomagnetic storms from the edge of this CME. Nothing like the wild Nov. 11–12 event, but high-latitude sky watchers might still snag some auroras.

We have aurora in Taos County NM right now... Can see with naked eye too. Wooooohooooo!

#aurora #northernlights #solarflare

A dome of diffuse red glow of aurora in night sky framed by the leafless branches of tree on the right and a stair step stucco wall on the left. A small band of green glow is on the horizon. You can see the white glow of several stars as well. Amazing!

‪Here are some great shots from our #GREGORSolarTelescope observation campaign in July. Peering into the #photosphere and #chromosphere, we caught several emerging active regions – and a #flare! This will help us study the plasma dynamics in active regions and how energy builds up to create a flare.

Emerging active region as seen by GREGOR. It's a black and white image of an area filled mostly with granulation pattern, a convection-cell structure looking simular to a very unorderly honeycomb pattern. Near center, that structure is broken up and one area appears especially dark compared to the surroundings.
