Sun releases the largest solar radiation storm ‘in over 20 years,’ forecasters say

By Ashley Strickland, January 19, 2026

"Powerful solar activity released by the sun is heading for Earth and it’s likely to create dazzling auroral displays in unexpected areas Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. It could also disrupt #satellite-based communications and #GPS accuracy.

"A solar radiation storm, ranked at a level four out of five on a severity scale, is being tracked by the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center, or #SWPC.

" 'An #S4 severe #SolarRadiation storm is now in progress - this is the largest solar radiation storm in over 20 years,' SWPC shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. 'The last time S4 levels were observed was in October, 2003. Potential effects are mainly limited to space launch, aviation, and satellite operations.' "

Oh look, more additions to the #KesslerSyndrome

(I'm sure you've seen this, @sundogplanets, even though they tried to bury this under the New Year's pile.)

Space explorers should be mandated to bring their debris and rubbish home. Starlink, NASA, Orbital etc should not be permitted to continue filling space with rubbish, dead satellites or other stuff. The lesson on this planet is already clear - we make too much disposable stuff and we are polluting at an indefensible rate. #KesslerSyndrome #ProfSamLawler #Astronomy

Will 2026 be the 'Year Of The Kessler Syndrome?"

I'd rather have the Year Of Linux Desktop thanks...

Reposting for those not bridged to BlueSky, and to add alt-text, because this is important!

Jonathan McDowell @planet4589.bsky.social posted this morning: "The number of active satellites in orbit has now passed the 14000 mark according to my estimates"

A histogram of the number of active satellites in Earth orbit over time, colour-coded by Starlink, other maneuverable payloads, and non-maneuverable payloads. The number steadily increases with about equal fraction maneuverable and non maneuverable, from 1960 until 2000, when there's a small jump in the number of maneuverable payloads. And then in 2019 Starlink starts shooting up and absolutely dominates the overall number. The total number of active satellites follows a hockey-stick shape, where the inflection point is 2019 when Starlink started launching.

So, I was talking with my supervisor about how #Starlink is trying to divert money intended for #FiberOptic, and told her about the #KesslerEffect (which will probably be caused by old Starlink satellites).
"I guess that will knock us back to landlines," was her reply.
"All the more reason to have fiber in place!" I chimed in!
