Yesterday's surprise #aurora struggling to get through all the high fog. The comet I originally went out to capture did not. But this is a cool consolation prize considering we rarely even get green aurora down here. Stacked image of a few dozen single exposures, which is why the whole thing looks slightly molten.

Still daydreaming about the spectacular display of Northern Lights we were lucky to catch this past weekend while we were on a team building trip...✨

#Explore #NorthernLights #AuroraBorealis #Iceland

Night picture showing a bus, some people who have gotten off the bus taking pictures of the sky, and a magnificent display of aurora borealis on the sky.

So, was hanging out in Durness, northern Scotland, last night, and the fireworks was well good, innit.

A photograph of Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, taken on the north coast of Scotland.

The image is taken out towards the sea. The sky is a big curtain of green, which is reflected in the sea itself. The curtain is ragged on its right hand edge, and the night sky with stars takes up the right edge of the picture.

In the foreground on the right side is a white camper van, pointing leftwards, and standing in front of it is a figure in a red and black jacket. This is me.

Growing Green

We chose a safe, off-road parking spot to observe the #aurora. As I began to photograph, a car approached from behind us and lit the tree beside me.
The result was almost the same shape as the developing aurora.

The yellowish glow on the horizon is a group of farms beyond the hill.

Canon Powershot G3 X, f/2.8, ISO-800, 15 sec. exposure.

A colour photo of a night sky full of stars, including the Pleiades. On the right is a well-grown green tree, brightly lit from behind the observer. The horizon is a dark block at the bottom of the shot, and a faint yellow glow is visible just above the skyline. A strong green shape is in the centre of the shot; this is the beginning of a Northern Lights display.

Áróra

In Norse mythology the #aurora were the armour and weapons of the Valkyrie. The word is derived from Old Norse Valkyrja ("Chooser of the Slain") who guide the souls of the battle-slain to Odin's hall Valhalla.

In Finland, a fox was thought to have created the aurora, its bushy tail throwing sparks into the sky.

Scottish legend refers to the lights as “Merry Dancers” engaged in battle.

A colour photo of a dark and starry sky filled with the Northern Lights. Stars can be seen across the top, and the foreground is a roadside barrier in silhouette, but the rest of the shot is filled by a wedge of Aurora Borealis extending from the lower left to the top right. The bright green loops are almost concentric, with the centre being off the right side of the shot. Above the arcs are subtle spikes of green extending upwards. It's very beautiful.

In The Beginning

A Bortle 3¹ area, and we're aurora hunting. Thinking that we weren't going to be lucky because the KP forecast was very low, we decided to take some landscape shots of the small farms and the stunning starry sky.

What we didn't know was that Lady Aurora had begun, very faintly, to smile on us.
Then the show began.

"A lullaby of lights,
The aurora cradles the night,
Her arms a radiant embrace,
Soothing the Arctic chill
With her warm spectral glow.
A nocturnal serenity,
She blankets the stars,
Her luminescent lullaby
Lulling the night to sleep
In her iridescent arms."
