Yesterday's surprise #aurora struggling to get through all the high fog. The comet I originally went out to capture did not. But this is a cool consolation prize considering we rarely even get green aurora down here. Stacked image of a few dozen single exposures, which is why the whole thing looks slightly molten.
Still daydreaming about the spectacular display of Northern Lights we were lucky to catch this past weekend while we were on a team building trip...✨

So, was hanging out in Durness, northern Scotland, last night, and the fireworks was well good, innit.

Growing Green
We chose a safe, off-road parking spot to observe the #aurora. As I began to photograph, a car approached from behind us and lit the tree beside me.
The result was almost the same shape as the developing aurora.
The yellowish glow on the horizon is a group of farms beyond the hill.

Áróra
In Norse mythology the #aurora were the armour and weapons of the Valkyrie. The word is derived from Old Norse Valkyrja ("Chooser of the Slain") who guide the souls of the battle-slain to Odin's hall Valhalla.
In Finland, a fox was thought to have created the aurora, its bushy tail throwing sparks into the sky.
Scottish legend refers to the lights as “Merry Dancers” engaged in battle.

In The Beginning
A Bortle 3¹ area, and we're aurora hunting. Thinking that we weren't going to be lucky because the KP forecast was very low, we decided to take some landscape shots of the small farms and the stunning starry sky.
What we didn't know was that Lady Aurora had begun, very faintly, to smile on us.
Then the show began.

"A lullaby of lights,
The aurora cradles the night,
Her arms a radiant embrace,
Soothing the Arctic chill
With her warm spectral glow.
A nocturnal serenity,
She blankets the stars,
Her luminescent lullaby
Lulling the night to sleep
In her iridescent arms."
